IHE BATTALION Wednesday, July 23, 1969 College Station, Texas Page 3 BOUND FOR IRELAND Mrs. Donna Donovan and son Brian, 3, of 1100 Goode St., College Station, are shown at Oakland International Air port waiting to board a plane for Shannon, Ireland. They will meet husband, Gerald, Texas A&M instructor there. Prof May Detect Water Pollution A quickly-applied method for detecting water pollution and its toxicity may be developed by a Texas A&M biology professor. Dr. Herman Kleerekoper • will direct study of the technique through a $200,269 grant from the Federal Water Pollution Con trol Administration. The project title is “Use of Avoidance Be havior to Detect and Quantify Sub-lethal Pollution Effects.” The Canadian zoologist who joined A&M’s Institute of Life Sciences last year also has been awarded a $7,400 pilot experiment grant for similar work in the area of pesticides. The latter award was by the National Insti tute of Environmental Health Sciences of the U. S. Department of Health, Education and Wel fare. In both cases a previously es tablished $84,000 “fishing hole”— technically called a computerized monitoring unit — and data on fishes normal behavior patterns will be employed. “Our procedure will be to de termine concentrations of pollu tants at which fish show distress and die,” the scientist explained. “We have good reason to be lieve that we can find a level short of lethal concentration at which fish begin to behave ab normally, long before they actual ly die,” Kleerekoper added. He noted a great deal of re search has been done in recent years on resistance and tolerance of fish to pollutants, including heavy metal pollutants produced in mining. Such substances for eign to the marine habitat cause damage before they reach lethal concentration. Kleerekoper said the project will concentrate on zinc and cop per “which are very serious con taminants.” Studies will be conducted in the computerized monitoring unit, a 4000 - gallon, 256 - square - foot tank with 2,000 photoelectric cells built into the floor by which fish movements are studied. Lights above the tank cast the fish shad- Something German authenic saurbraten Bavarian dumplings Each Sunday noon served at Duncan Hall Open: Monday - Saturday 6:45 A. M. to 1:15 P. M. 4:30 P. Computer-generated data shows direction and speed of movement of the fish under given circum stances, as well as angle of turns. “We are extremely well equip ped to study fish movement and investigate locomotive behavior produced by various concentra tions of pollutants,” the former McMaster University professor explained. LOANS Earle s Book Is Widely Used “Engineering Design Graphics” by Dr. James H. Earle of Texas A&M is now being used in 40 universities, according to the Addison-Wesley Publishing Co. of Reading, Mass. It is Prof. Earle’s first text book. “The book is an attempt to break away from problems for the sake of problems themselves,” he said. Earle heads A&M’s Engineer ing Graphics Department and has co-authored 10 problem work books, illustrated many publica tions and is creator of A&M’s “Cadet Slouch” cartoon. On July 1, Earle started a one- year term as vice chairman of the Graphics Section, American Society of Engineering Educa tion. He will become chairman of the national division in 1970-71. Earle said he worked 18 months on “Engineering Design Graph ics,” including most weekends and evenings. He explained the purpose of the book is to develop a student’s ability to design and create. A native of Jacksonville, Tex as, Earle received a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1955, a master of education in 1962 and a doctor of education in 1964. All degrees were earned at A&M. He joined A&M’s faculty in 1959, after a tour in the U. S. Air Force’s Strategic Air Com mand. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1961, to associate professor in 1964 and to full professor this spring. His new book, released this spring, will be used in both freshman semesters of engineer ing graphics and engineering de sign graphics. The course is re quired for all engineering stu dents. Donaldson Heads CS United Chest Wesley Donaldson, purchasing director of Texas A&M, is the new president of the College Sta tion United Chest board of di rectors. Other new officers elected by the board are Dr. R. L. Skraba- nek, professor in A&M’s Agricul tural Economics and Sociology Department, first vice president; Howard Vestal, director of man agement services for the univer sity, second vice president; Clark Diebel, A&M controller, treasur er; and Daniel Whitt, assistant director of A&M’s Physical Plant Department, secretary. Dr. Skrabanek also was named chairman of the United Chest’s Budget and Admissions Commit tee. % $100 Confidential Loan Service UNIVERSITY LOAN CO. 317 Patricia (N6i*th Gate) Telephone 846-8319 AGGIES ...
