Before University of Texas faithfuls start heading for cover, the Aggies emphasize they are forming their armada for re search, specifically in the area Journalism Prof Added For Fall A&iM’s Journalism Department will add an experienced photog rapher to its staff this fall term. Howard F. Eilers, 29, will be assigned as assistant professor to teach journalism’s growing photography needs, announced C. J. (Skip) Leaboi department head. Beginning photography in the Journalism Department has in creased two-fold—from three to six sections, Leabo pointed out. He hopes to expand the visual communications area even more in the near future. Eilers received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota in 1962 and Master of Fine Arts degree from Ohio Uni versity in 1964. He also has done post-graduate work at the University of Min nesota and Bemidji State College, Minnesota. He has taught photography at Bemidji State College and at Southern Illinois University, Car- bondale, since 1967. Leabo said Eilers will join the department Sept. 1. of unsteady aerodynamics, in cluding clear-air turbulence. Last year Texas A&M was selected by the Department of Defense to establish a “center of excellence” in the flight dynam ics field as part of DOD’s “Proj ect Themis.” Funds for the three- year A&M study total approxi mately $600,000. Since being selected for the project, the university has dou bled the size of its fleet. Its array of planes, however, will never be mistaken for a bevy of sleek corporate jets. The lat est acquisitions, a T-34 trainer and C-45, are government surplus. The C-45, A&M’s only twin-en gine aircraft was in maximum “moth balls” when the university took delivery last month. A third plane, a Piper PA-18, is a refuge from the Border Patrol. The university’s first plane — and the one still being used the most in flight testes — is a vintage Grumman Ag-Cat mod ified. While none too fancy, the A&M planes are getting the job done, notes Stanley H. Lowy, associate professor of aerospace engineer- ions ;hroug -« alSt*- It c« ing and flight director for the project. “The planes are being used to gather basic data for a detailei iponsi study of unsteady flight dynam ics,” Lowy explains. “This basic data is necessary for further re search, which will be applicable to all types of aircraft.” “Once we know how the air craft reacts to a given input,” he continues, “we can determine how it will react to any other input.” At least one of the planes is flown almost every day, Lowy observes. jnd bt—^ MSC3 nimer c ind ho Ends ANNOUNCING The greatest food thrill since Honey Fried Chicken. Old English Fish and Chipi at the MSC FOUNTAIN ROOM The Church..For a Fuller Life..For You but w?hy ? Becky is a water baby—one part mermaid, three parts fish. We took her to the lake this summer, and she splashed and tumbled in the water joyously. I had to watch her every minute. I finally had to take her out by force—much to her consternation and objection. It took some doing to distract her. Actually, it's relatively simple to comfort a small child whose wishes have been thwarted. A toy, a cookie, sometimes a loving hug will turn the trick. But how about grown-up frustrations? When sick with disappoint ment, heartbroken or dejected by a bad turn of events, where can an adult turn for consolation and support? God's Church is the mainstay to every situation. Radiating God's goodness, it offers reassurance and relief to the baffled and the hope less. Men turning toward its promise find new confidence and faith and hope recovered.
