S. - Norwegian Relations Enhanced By Open Sea Cruise THE BATTALION Thursday, June 26, 1969 College Station, Texas Page 3 Cooperative relationships be tween Norwegian and U. S. ocean ographers were enhanced during the last eight months at Texas A&M University. During the period. Dr. Grethe R, Hasle participated in Antarctic productivity investigations, made her first open sea cruise—in the Gulf of Mexico—and taught grad uate oceanography. The Norwegian marine botanist of the University of Oslo leaves Sunday on the return trip to her country. A&M colleagues told her “bon voyage” Thursday and presented the visiting professor an A&M seal-emblazoned desk set. Academic Vice President Dr. Horace R. Byers said Norway, with its great tradition in the field, and oceanography are sy nonymous. “We wish there were more Dr. Hasles so we could have one each year,” added the former geosci ences dean. Several Norwegians are considered the classicists of the field. Geosciences Dean Earl Cook and Dr. Richard A. Geyer, ocean ography head, were among those attending the farewell party. “We would like to say ‘au re- voir’ rather than good bye,” Gey er commented, “because your very high phofessional reputation is sure to bring' you back to the U. S.” During Dr. Hasle’s stay. Prof. Tryve Braarud of the University of Oslo’s Institute of Marine Biol ogy wa^s a graduate lecture speak er at A&M. Norwegian ocean ographers also participated in the International Weddell Sea Ocean- agraphic Expedition which in volved several A&M scientists, among them Dr. Sayed Z. El- Sayed with whom Dr. Hasle worked closely. “During her stay at A&M, &Dr. Hasle has been of great assistance to our students and project activ ities in the Antarctic and Gulf,” El-Sayed said. She participated in a productiv ity investigation cruise in the Gulf,, collecting water and phy toplankton sample studied by A&M students. The Norge scien tist studied phytoplankton sam ples collected last year abroad the ice-breaker “Glacier” during IWSOE and from the Antarctic by the USNS “Eltanin.” HIS AND HERS Matching pants were ‘in’ at the MSC Directorate dance held Tuesday night in the MSC Ballroom.
