He pointed out it will take less than two years for them to qual ify in “the top class” of lines men. The six-month program, sec ond of its kind at A&M, is fund ed by the Department of Labor as part of the Manpower Devel opment and Training Act. It is conducted at A&M in coopera tion with the Texas Employment Commission and Texas Educa tion Agency. All training — classroom and practical experience — is receiv ed at A&M’s Research Annex, a former Air Force base. “Things worked out good,” Fade continued. “They have really applied themselves,” he continued. “They now have a background that old er linesmen, with 15 or 20 years experience, do not have.” Fade attributed this to class room training, for example, in principles of electricity and theory, that on-the-job training idoes not provide the average linesman. A&M linesmen spend an aver age of 15 hours a week during the six month period in the classroom. The remainder ac cents actual experience. “We have some real foreman material among these men,” Fade noted. A&M Prof’s Book Listed As One Of 12 Outstanding A Texas A&M professor’s book has been listed in Princeton’s “Outstanding Books in Industrial Relations, 1968,” announced Har old E. Research of material for the books is credited with Burgess being named “Outstanding Re searcher” for 1968-69 in the col lege of Business Administration. Burgess is author of two other books, “Managing Company Air planes,” published in 1954, and “Top Executive Pay Package,” in 1964. A graduate of Harvard and Co lumbia, Burgess served with the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company as chief statistician and the National Industrial Confer ence Board before continuing his studies at Columbia. He joined A&M in 1964.
