Page 6 THE BATTAUON College Station, Texas Thursday, June 12, 1969 BSC Active Year-Round, Seeks International Aggies COORDINATORS Ai Lan Doan, 18, of Da Nang, South Vietnam, and Jim Morrisey, 21, of San Antonio, were named International Student Affairs coordinators at Texas A&M’s Baptist Stu dent Center. Aggieland was one of three Texas universities selected to initiate the special summer Baptist Christian Education Commission program. Purdue Pro, fessor Bassman To Join A&M Economics Dr. Robert L. Basmann of Pur due University will join the fac ulty of Texas A&M’s Department of Economics in September, an nounced Dr. M. L. Greenhut, economics head. Basmann becomes the second internationally recognized econo mist to affiliate with the Col lege of Liberal Arts’ department. Dr. Oskar Morgenstern, Prince ton mathematical economist, will serve as adjunct distinguished professor. Basmann is a renowned eco nometrician. Greenhut said Basmann will teach and help to develop the “expanding econometric and quantitative economics program” in the A&M department. Basmann, a Fellow of the Eco nometrics Society, is author of more than 30 technical publica tions in the areas of econometrics and quantitative economics. Among many other important works, Greenhut added, Basmann has made “path-breaking” con tributions in the area of simul taneous equation estimation, be ing one of the originators of the two-stage least squares method. “His research in this phase of econometrics relates to a back ground interest in national in come theory,” Greenhut noted. Basmann received his doctor ate from Iowa State and has taught at Northwestern, Uni versity of Chicago and Univer sity of Minnesota prior to Purdue. While many campus activities tend to fade out, or at least slow down in the summer, Texas A&M’s Baptist Student Center is moving full steam ahead. Because of its year-long active program among Aggies, it is one of three Texas universities to re ceive two student coordinators of International Student Affairs. Named were Ai Lan Doan, 18, of Da Nang, South Vietnam, and Jim Morrisey, 21, of San An tonio. Director Bob Burch pointed out the center’s primary goal the next 10 weeks will be directed towards A&M’s international student body. “That doesn’t mean we will ne glect others,” he said. “It means we are beefing-up our interna tional program.” International Aggies have long made a strong showing at state wide BSU meetings. During April, A&M interna tional students were the largest single group attending the In ternational Student Conference at Camp Lakeview near Palestine. Burch said Aggie Internation als exceeded the combined at tendance of the University of Texas at Austin and the Univer sity of Houston which tradition ally have larger international en rollments. There are more than 90 Baptist Student Unions throughout the state at various colleges and uni versities. Miss Doan, a senior at Texas Woman’s University, was born in Da Nang. She came to the U. S. in early 1967 with the aid of a Navy chaplain who had been sta tioned in South Vietnam. Although she needed one and one-half years to complete her high school studies in Vietnam, she successfully passed Texas achievement tests, completing her studies in four months. The oldest of seven children, Miss Doan entered TWU in the summer of 1967. She will gradu ate next spring, but hopes to continue medical studies in the states. Morrisey, a senior at Howard Payne, has been active in Youth for Christ programs several years. A psychology major, he anticipates graduate studies fol lowing commencement next May. “We have come to make friends,” they agreed. “We hope to be able to present a good program through the summer for everyone,” Morrisey added. “There will be something in teresting for everyone,” smiled Miss Doan. In addition to weekday pro grams, the youth coordinators have planned two weekend trips this summer. The first, June 27-29, will be to Houston with visits to NASA and the Astrodome. A second trip to “LBJ” country July 25-27 will highlight a tour of the state capitol including meetings with legislators and a Texas style barbecue at the LBJ Lake. A new program, “Open Forum on International Affairs,” will be held weekly at the center, 201 North Main in College Station. efficient executive’s best friend the fiJore/co 84 dictating machine Automatic and Easy to Use Remote Controlled Reusable Magnetic Tape Easy Transcription The Norelco 84 is the modern efficient way to handle daily correspondence.
