Peter Plotts, manager of the
Book Department at Texas
A&M’s Exchange Store, has been
awarded a certificate following
completion of a management
seminar sponsored by the Nation
al Association of College Stores,
Inc.
The three-year course — one
week of studies annually — is
held at Stanford University in
California.
Plotts received his certificate
from A&M President of Business
Affairs Tom D. Cherry.
The National Association of
College Stores is the national
trade association for university-
owned stores.
“We are proud you made this
accomplishment,” Cherry told
Plotts. Also taking part in the
awards ceremony were Chuck
Cargill, Exchange Store manager,
and Howard L. Vestal, director
of management services.
Yet Med Marker
Dedicated Today
Texas A&M officials were to
dedicate the College of Veterinary
Medicine’s new facilities’ marker
today in a memorial to one of
the institution’s first graduates.
The brief 3:16 p. m. service in
front of the $4.2 million veteri
nary medicine complex was to
honor the late Dr. R. R. Childers
of Jasper.
The roadside marker was re
cently placed in front of the col
lege’s facilities by Mrs. Childers.
She will attend and Dr. A. A.
Price, dean, will speak at the
service.
Born in 1895 in the Peach Tree
Community near Jasper, Dr.
Childers completed eight grades
of secondary school education
between 1902 and 1914. He at
tended school about six months
of the year while working the
other months.
He arrived at A&M with less
than enough money for return
trip home. At the close of the
first day on campus, he had
registered for school, found a
place to live and had secured a
job.
When the College of Veterinary
Medicine opened in 1916, Dr. Chil
ders, along with 12 other stu
dents, registered for the new cur
riculum, never before available in
Texas.
He interrupted his studies in
1918 to join the Army. He re
turned to A&M following the war
and was graduated with the DVM
degree in 1921.
He then returned to Jasper were
he pioneered the practice of vet
erinary medicine. His health
failed within four years and the
next 18 years was spent regain
ing his health.
Childers reopened his Jasper of
fice in 1943 after rejection for
World War II service.
The next 24 yeans was dedicated
to his profession. Honored as the
Outstanding Practitioner of Tex
as in 1955, Dr. Childers was an
active member of local, state and
national professional societies.
