LOS ANGELES Cff*) —“I just
rant to be known as Ken Holtz-
man of the Chicago Cubs,” says
the left-handed pitcher who ob
jects to being called the next
Sandy Koufax.
"That comparison is unfair,”
declares the 23-year-old south-
pay who currently has pitched
33 consecutive scoreless innings.
“There never will be another
Sandy Koufax.”
“He wasn’t as fast Tuesday
night,” added Durocher after a
7-0 victory over Los Angeles.
“But he’s some kind of pitcher.”

ADIOS!
by John Platzer
In all of sport there is nothing quite like it.
Hordes of wild-eyed, intoxicated Cajuns join their voices in the
yell which seems to encase all those who would dare enter the confines
of LSU’s gridiron paradise: TIGER BAIT!! TIGER BAIT!!
The size of the stadium keeps the number of voices below 67,511
and, yet, to the caged victims an estimate of one milhon would seem
conservative.
A&M sports season began in this Baton Rouge setting with the
Aggies going down to a (13—12) defeat. An unprecedented number of
injuries soon reduced the Aggies’ title expectations to a 3—7 football
season.
The first of the year’s two Southwest Conference championships
won by the Aggies came in basketball. Led by seniors Billy Bob
Barnett, Sonny Benefield and Ronnie Peret, Coach Shelby Metcalfs
crew sacked up the crown with a 79—66 victory over Arkansas.
In baseball, A&M began with a nine game winning streak but a
team-wide batting slump soon overtook the team. Coach Tom
Chandler’s squad ended the year with a 16—10 record.
Youth was the watchword for Coach Charlie Thomas’ track team
in a very successful season. Champions of the giant Border Olympics,
the Aggies took third place in the Southwest Conference meet held in
Waco.
Almost as a matter of habit, the Aggies captured the SWC golf
championship. Coach Henry Ransom’s team consisted of Reggie Majors,
Bill Wade, Duke Butler and Richard Ellis among others.
Good seasons were also enjoyed by Coach Omar Smith’s tennis
team and Coach Art Adamson’s swimmers.
Because of limited space, many of these sports, as well as
intramurals, did not receive the notice they deserved. This is regretable
but could not be helped.
Overall, it was one of the most enjoyable years I have ever
experienced. Most of the thanks for this goes to what has to be the
greatest athletic department ever assembled.
At the very top of the list is Coach Gene Stallings. In just five
years Stallings has done more for A&M than any other one man in the
school’s history. He is an inspiration to all who know him.
Each of the other members of the staff are also “the greatest.”
The friendliness and cooperative attitudes of such men as Spec
Gammon (Sports Information Director, Marvin Tate (Assistant Athletic
Director), Wally Groff (Business Manager) and Billy Pickard (Athletic
Trainer) make a sportswriter’s job easy.
Assistant Sports Editor Richard Campbell (who will occupy this
desk next fall) deserves special thanks as well as condolences. Those
members of the Batt staff who both contributed stories to the Sports
Department and said they were going to contibute (several times, in
fact) also helped make the year pass quickly.
Special praise should also be extended to Battalion secretaries
Mrs. Charlotte McCarroll and Mrs. Wanda Allison as well as Mrs. Cecilia
Prihoda and Mrs. Polly Patranella.
What other way would a sportswriter close out his final column
than with a prediction? Judging from the recent Maroon-White game, I
predict that 67,000 LSU partisans will have little to yell about on the
night of September 20.
