For Marathon
Bowling Mark
Six A&M students will begin
bowling Friday in pursuit of an
intercollegiate marathon record.
Memorial Student Center lanes
will remain open 24 hours a day
while the Aggie keglers roll at
an 11-hour A&M record and Bill
Halstead’s 151 hours and 25 min
utes of bowling at Tampa, Fla.,
in 1966.
“They seem confident they can
go the whole weekend,” remark
ed Gary Surratt, MSC lanes stu
dent manager of Hughes Springs.
He said the bowlers’ first goal
will be 36 hours.
Students out for the record in
clude Rick Daugherty, junior of
Griffin, Ga.; John Otts, junior,
Terrain, Calif.; and Mark Olson,
soph, Canyon, on the first team.
Team two will consist of David
Pearce, senior, Lake Jackson;
Gerry Pendery, senior, Fort
Worth, and Garland Slider,
freshman, Bryan.
Precautions will be taken
against blisters, drowsiness and
hunger, Surratt added. The
marthoners will use two MSC
lanes. Surratt indicated anyone
wishing to bowl along with them
between midnight and 8 a.m. will
be charged only 25 cents a game
and may use MSC shoes free of
charge. Free coffee also will be
provided.
Bowling instructor Les Palmer
indicated the unofficial school
record of 11 hours was set sev
eral years ago.
Halstead’s 1966 stint, 17 hours
from being a week, allowed him
to roll 1,201 games, according to
the “Guinness Book of Records.”
He knocked down 165,959 pins
and threw 1,948 strikes. It was
computed that he lifted 130.3
tons and walked 127.2 miles.
