Coach Chandler is expected to use the non-conference tilts to test his reserve strength. Catch er Mike Heitmann and infielders Barney Harris, Herbie Watts and Mike DeNiro are all sched uled to see action against Mis souri. The regular Aggie lineup con sists of catcher Larry Stelley, first baseman Eddie Vaughn, shortstop Jim Raley and outfield ers Dave Elmendorf, Bob Long and Bob Arnold. The Aggies took a three game sweep of Southern Methodist last weekend in their first SWC action of the year. The sweep also brought A&M’s season rec ord to 7-0. Behind the strong pitching of Doug Rau and Dave Benesh, the Aggies set the Mustangs down 3-0 and 2-1 Friday and then came back Saturday to win 7-5. A&M started fast in the Sat urday game and quickly built up a 6-1 lead after four innings. Long and Arnold walked in the first for A&M and were driven in by a double by Hadaway. Three more runs were added to the Aggie cause in the third on a homerun by Arnold and a two run double by Maida. SMU scored three in the fifth but relief pitcher Walter Varvel came in to preserve the victory. Charles Kelley started the game for the Aggies and Larry Mc Combs pitched the middle inn ings. Hadaway paced the Aggies’ nine hit attack with three hits and two runs-batted-in. Rau went the distance in shutting out the Mustangs on four hits in Friday’s opener. Stelley, who had a 3 for 3 game, drove in the first run in the second and then A&M added two others in the fifth on a pair of triples by Bob Long and Dave Elmendorf and a single by Hadaway. (Photo by Mike Wright) Aggie Tracksters Capture Tech Meet With 68 Points By RICHARD CAMPBELL The Texas Aggie track team swept to a decisive victory in a quadrangular meet Saturday in Lubbock by collecting a total of 68 points. A&M piled up seven first places to leave the field of Texas Tech, Southern Methodist, and Texas Christian far behind. Host Texas Tech took second place with 36 points while SMU and TCU tied for third with 34 apiece. The relay team is composed of Scott Hendricks, Rockie Woods, Jack Abbott, and Curtis Mills. Woods also picked up a meet record in the 100-yard dash by turning in his best time of the year with a 9.4. Hendricks fin ished second in 9.5. Ronnie Lightfoot also took a first place in the shot beating SWC cham pion Ronnie Mercer of Tech and SMU strongman Sammy Walker. Lightfoot tossed the shot 57-11 also for a new meet record. the three-mile run in 15:16.9. Steve Bancroft took second in the 880-yard run with a 1:57.5 clocking. Kim Sutton took sec ond in the high jump with a 6-<> leap while John Greathuse and John Taylor jumped 6-4 for a third place tie. The Aggie mile relay team made up of Bancroft, Strong, Boyd and Mills also took first place in their specialty with a 3:12.9. A&M will travel to Dallas for the Invitational Meet Saturday. Overhouse Signs Ag Cage Letter Deward Strong placed in both hurdle events for the Maroon. He set a meet record taking the 120-yard highs in 14.2 and took second in the 440-yard inter mediates with a 53.4 clocking. Mills, taking a vacation from his 440-yard dash specialty, set a new meet record with a 21-0 time in the 220-yard dash. Overhouse averaged 20 points and 14.6 rebounds per game this season. During Overhouse’s final two years at Clear Creek, the Wildcats posted a combined 68-6 record. A&M scored its other run in the sixth on singles by Long and Arnold and a sacrifice fly by Elmendorf. Benesh struck out nine in the game and didn’t walk a man. The Aggies have been paced at the plate thus far this year by Stelley and Hadaway each with .455 averages. Long is at .440 while Elmendorf is at .370 and Vaughn is hitting at a .348 clip. Raley is hitting .292 while Arn old is at .250 and Maida is aver aging .136. Long leads the team in both homeruns and runs-batted-in with two and eight respectively. Other Aggie homeruns have been hit by Elmendorf, Vaughn, Harris and Arnold. Rau is now 3-0 on the year with a 1.96 earned-run-average. He has struckout 26 while issu ing 10 walks.
