Scores of National Guards- nen with fixed bayonets moved n on a demonstration at Wis- !0nsin, but it ended without vio- ence. At San Francisco State, the spring semester got off to a rocky start as Negro students broke uf) a class taught by a professor opposed to a faculty strike. However, striking students and ;eachers went to Classes at San Francisco to prevent cancellation )f new classes for lack of attend ance. They vowed to resume the strike once the new curriculum is established. IT WAS quiet at Duke Uni versity in Durham, N.C., where officials announced settlement with Negro students of a dispute which set off disorders last week. The University of Chicago was cleaning up its administration building after a 15-day student sit-in. At Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind., which has been relatively free of protests, the president announced he would expel students and prosecute non students who try forcible disrup tion. The president, the Retf. Theodore M. Hesburgh, said he would give demonstrators 15 minutes for “meditation” before moving against them. THE NEW confrontation at Wisconsin apparently delayed immediate withdrawal of the 1,- 900 National Guardsmen as signed to the Madison campus by Gov. Warren P. Knowles. Several hundred students surged through an administra tion and class building chanting, “Support the black demands, support the black demands.” At San Francisco, the return to class was a new tactic by the dissident teachers and students. Members of the AFL-CIO Amer ican Foundation of Teachers handed out leaflets explaining that the new classes might be canceled if nobody showed up. Sdl'-: Engineers: Good ideas get off the ground at Boeing. So do careers. Let's talk about it on Monday and Tuesday, February 24 and 25. At The Boeing Company, you can be a member of a team that's famous for making good ideas fly. Such as the 707, America's first jetliner. And the 727 trijet, the 737 twinjet, Boeing-Vertol helicopters, the Boeing-built first stage for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Apollo/Saturn V moon rocket. And the NASA Lunar Orbiter, the USAF Minuteman, and the USN hydrofoil gunboat Tucumcari. Boeing has exciting new projects on the way up, too. The 747 superjet, world's largest and fastest commercial jetliner, scheduled for airline delivery in 1 969. America's supersonictransport, nowbeing developed at the company's Commercial Airplane Division. Plus other advanced programs in early development and on Boeing drawing boards. They can help get your career off to a dynamic start in applied research, design, test, manufactur ing, service or facilities engineering or computer technology. Visit your college placement office and schedule an interview with the Boeing representative. Boeing is an equal opportunity employer. Dr. John C. Calhoun, Jr., A&M vice president for programs, has been appointed chairman of the Presidential panel to study the Santa Barbara off-shore oil spill age and recommend means to avoid such mishaps. Announcement of the 14-mem ber Santa Barbara Oil Spill Panel was made by Dr. Lee A. Du- Bridge, President Nixon’s science adviser. Calhoun emphasized his panel is completely separate from the one which Secretary of the Interior Walter J. Hickel is forming to review regulations governing off shore drilling. The group headed by Calhoun is a science and engineering panel which will concern itself with four basic areas outlined by Du- Bridge: “How the federal government can best and most rapidly assist ih restoring the beaches and wat ers around Santa Barbara; how best to prevent this kind of sud den and massive oil pollution; how the methods of existing tech nology can be developed to con trol and remove oil pollution, and what avenues of research can be identified where resources will be most profitably committed in solving this problem.” Dr. DuBridge stressed the Cal houn panel will not make a de tailed review of the Santa Bar bara incident. He said the purpose of the panel is rather to take a broad look at the oil solution problem in the ocean environ ment. Calhoun came here in 1955 as dean of engineering and was ap pointed vice president after re turning from his Washington assignment.
