Aggie Swimmers Fall To Longhorns To Even Record

Jon Beall started the swim
ming season off right Saturday
night and Tuesday afternoon, by
setting two individual records as
the Aggies whipped Rice, 97-16,
and then fell to Texas, 80-33-
Beall, a senior . from Houston
Memorial High School, broke the
A&M pool record, and the A&M
Varsity record, with a time of
5:33.1 in the 500-yard Freestyle
Saturday.
Other times in the event were
Steve Ash of A&M, who finished
second with a time of 5:45.7 fol
lowed by Rice's Durant and Rob
erts with times of 5:50.5 and
6:06.6. He also set a new varsity
record for the 1,000-yard free
style by finishing third in the
meet with Texas.
The Aggies performed strong
ly against the Owls but met
tough opposition from the Long
horns, who are tabbed as the
second-best team in the confer
ence.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle
against Rice, Hank IPaup, A&M
junior from Midland, set a new
varsity record with a time of
12;01.6. Repo Beltran of A&M
finished second with 12:15.0 fol
lowed by Rice’s Roberts and Long
with times of 13:20.2 and 13:46.1.
The A&M 100-yard Medley Re
lay team set a new pool record
with a time of 3:54.3 to Rice’s
4:01.4. Scores of the A&M team
were Tom Sparks 57 >9, Larry
Linn, 68.5; Colin Dunn, 54.3; and
Bob Dommel 53.5.
A&M’s Jerry Patterson finished
second with 33.7, followed by
Rice’s Root and Phelps with 34.5
and 35.2 times.
The 200 - yard Freestyle was
won by Edgar Blackledge with
a time of 2:01.8 followed by
Steve Henry, with 3:04.5. Rice’s
Roberts and Mohr finished with
times of 2:06.5 and 2:25.6.

Deutsch won the 66%-yard Free
style with a time of 32.7, and
The 133%-yard Individual Med
ley was won-by Ronnie Rogers of
A&M with a score of 1:24.7 fol
lowed by teammate John Green-
hut with 1:24.8. Rice’s Roberts
and Mohr finished with times of
131.0 and 131.1. Dunn of A&M
won the 200 yard Butterfly with
a score of 2:21, with David
George of A&M finishing second
with 2:32.5. Poliak and Caldwell
of Rice had scores of 2:44.9 and
3.06.7.
The 100-yard freestyle was
won by Linn of A&M with a total
time of 52.2 followed by Dommel
with 53.9. Roberts and Mohr of
Rice had 55.3 and 56.7 scores.
