The Fish hit 19 of 29 shots for 62.1 per cent in the final twenty minutes to put the game out of reach of the Owlets. In all, A&M hit 33 of 59 from the field for a brilliant 56 per cent, while Rice suffered through 28 of 77 for a meager 36.4 per cent. Jeff Watkins again led the Fish with 23 points and managed to drag down 11 rebounds as four Fish hit in double figures. Skip Carleton finished with 18 and Rick Duplantis had 16 and Frank Farnsworth had 15 before fouling out. The Fish will get one of their toughest assignments Tuesday as they host the Texas Yearlings, a team which crushed them 126-76 earlier in the year. The Yearlings will bring a 7-1 record into the 5:45 p.m. contest, losing only to the Rice Freshmen, 67-65, last Wednesday. Probable starters for the Year lings will be Scooter Lenox (22.3), Eric Groscurth (15.7), Richard Langdon (13.4), Steve Aaker (10.0), and Larry McCoy (6.2). Rip up our instructions on self-defense. '—^ Ags-TU Open SWC 2nd Rouni By JOHN PLATZER The second round push for the Southwest Conference cage cham pionship begins tonight at 8 for the Aggies as they host arch-rival Texas. A&M finished the first half of the SWC race tied with Baylor for the number one spot with a 6-1 record while the Longhorns of Coach Leon Black currently sport a 3-4 mark. Coach Shelby Metcalf’s cagers polished off the Steers 65-57 be fore regional television cameras in Austin earlier in the season. Texas carries a three game losing streak into the contest (A&M, Rice and Baylor), while the Aggies defeated Rice 90-82 in their last outing. The Longhorns are paced by Kurt Papp and Wayne Doyal with 18 and 15 point scoring averages respectively. The center position will probably be manned by Bruce Motley while Mike Smith is the top reserve. A battle be tween Larry Smith, Billy Black and Marcus Whitson has taken shape over the past couple of weeks for the Steers’ two guard slots. In the first meeting between the two clubs, Doyal kept Texas in the game with fine outside shooting in the first half but he cooled off in the second half and the Aggies’ superior talent showed through. Mike Heitmann, a junior from Houston Sam Houston, had one of his finest nights of the season Saturday to pace A&M in their victory over Rice. Heitmann con nected on 8 of 11 shots from the floor to gather 20 points before fouling out. Four other Aggies were in double figures in the contest with Billy Bob Barnett also scoring 20 while Ronnie Peret had 18 and Bill Cooksey and Sonny Benefield each contributed 13. Peret led the Aggies to a 54-50 rebound edge in the game with 14 while Barnett dragged off 9. Jim Naples paced the Rice at tack with 18 points while Gary Reist had 16 and Greg Williams contributed 14. The Aggies led at halftime 38-36 after connecting on only 39.3 per cent of their shots in the period. In the second half they pulled away from the Owls as they hit on 18 of 31 field goal attempts for a blistering 56.1 per cent. Turnovers again hurt A&M in the game as they committed 19 while Rice had! 16. An encouraging note for the Aggies in Rice game was the appearance of Harry Bostic for the first time since the game with TCU, five games back. The 6-6 senior entered the contest after Heitmann picked up his fifth foul and moved well on his bad leg although he failed to score. Bostic had not been expected to be able to play for another week. Barnett continues to lead the Aggies in scoring for the season with a 17.4 average while Peret is at 16.7 and Heitmann has a 13.5 average. Sonny Bennefield | u is averaging 12 while Bosfr at 6.3 and Steve Niles has a at a 4.8 clip. A&M’s top reserves haveii sophomores Bill Cooksey Chuck Smith and junior Brown.
