Texas A&M, Major Pool noted, is one of the nation’s top sources for Marine officers. AUSTIN hP) — Texas laws on resident and nonresident college tuition are shot through with inequities, Rep. Dave Allred of Wichita Falls said Monday. Particularly discriminat ed against, he said, are military personnel and their families and Texas girls who marry men from other states. Allred appeared before the House Committee on Government al Affairs and Efficiency in be half of his bill revising the resi dency laws. His bill includes a provision that would charge students from neighboring states resident tui tion — now $50 a semester — if their states’ colleges granted Texans the same privilege. ALLRED’S BILL would do away with the provision that a Texas girl must pay nonresident tuition — $200 per semester — if she marries someone from out of state. It also would allow families of military men to pay resident tuition if they remain in the state while the head of the family is overseas. Present law now takes away the resident tuition privi lege if the head of the family leaves the state. “The purpose of my bill is to rectify this and allow these people to continue their educations,” Allred told the committee. The bill preserves the present law allowing military personnel stationed in Texas to pay resident tuition. Allred’s bill would allow veterans who take up Texas resi dence within 31 days after their discharge to pay resident rates. A military man who leaves the service must stay in Texas a year to qualify as a resident under Texas law. HE SAID a problem at Mid western University in Wichita Falls prompted him to include the reciprocal tuition feature. The bill was automatically re ferred to a subcommittee, which was instructed to confer with military authorities and the Col lege Coordinating Board.
