Ag Tracksters To Run In Astrodome c
Coaches Charles Thomas and
Ted Nelson will take 18 members
of the Texas A&M track team to
Houston Friday and Saturday to
compete in the Astrodome Fed
eration National Track and Field
Relays.
The Aggies will be led by soph
omore Curtis Mills, second in the
440-yard dash in the Southwest
Conference Meet as a freshman,
and the mile relay team composed
of Steve Bancroft, David Dolton,
Mike Boyd, and Mills.
Also going with the team to
the meet are Rockie Woods who
has a 9.6 in the 100-yard dash,
Jack Abbott (14.0 in the 120-yard
high hurdles), Deward Strong
(14.3 in the high hurdles), Larry
McIntyre (15'7" in the pole vault),
John Taylor (6'5" in the high
jump) and Ronnie Lightfoot
(57'7" in the shot put).
All eight Southwest Conference
schools and the University of
Houston and Texas Southern will
enter teams in the Relays, Cle
burne Price, meet director, has
announced.
The big indoor attraction will
have its running events on the
largest oval ever put down under
a roof. The 352-yard wooden oval
is now under construction in Bos
ton under contract with the Hous
ton Sports Association which will

keep it for use in the annual Re
lays which are expected to be
come one of the nation’s most
prestigious winter events.
The addition of Olympic cham
pions Willie Davenport and Bob
Seagren has added special lustre
to the invitational field.
Davenport and Seagren bring
to 11 the number of Olympians
whose entries have been received
for the big indoor meet that will
see more than 1,000 competitors
in action over the two days.
Davenport won the Olympic
Gold Medal at Mexico in the 110-
yard high hurdles while Seagren
took the top prize in the pole vault,
after having set a world record
of 17 feet 9 inches in the event
earlier in the year in the U. S.
Seagren heads a contingent of
seven top track men from the
University of Southern California,
a group that also includes Len
nox Miller, the Mexico City Silver
Medal winner in the 100-meters.
Other Olympians to compete
here include Erv Hall of Villa-
nova, a second place medal win
ner in the 110-yard hurdles; Ron
Freeman of Arizona, a Bronze
Medal winner in the 400 meters;
A BIG TWO
Every basket was a big one Saturday night in G. Rollie
White as the Aggies came from behind to edge TCU,
72-71. Mike Heitmann (22) is shown getting two of the
Aggies points as Billy Bob Barnett gets set to fight the
Frogs’ James Cash for a possible rebound. The next cage
action for A&M is set for Tuesday night in Houston against
the University of Houston Cougars. (Photo by Mike
Wright)
Eyes of professional football
scouts are keeping a close watch
on at least 10 Texas Aggies as
the pro draft draws closer.
Tackle Rolf Krueger, quarter
back Edd Hargett, linebacker Bill
Hobbs, split end-defensive back
Tommy Maxwell and punter Steve
O’Neal, all of whom played in
post-season all-star games, likely
will go high in the draft.
Wingback-split end Bob Long,
fullback Wendell Housley, end-
tackle Tom Buckman, place-kicker
Charlie Riggs and defensive line
man George Resley also have been
contacted by various pro teams.
