Parents Scream
At Forced Trim
THEY CALL ’EM SANTA’S BELLES
Sandy Gutierrez, 21, left, and Virginia Lee Runnion, 25,
part of a team of Santa’s Belles, are working in Los An
geles getting passers-by to contribute to the Volunteers of
America Christmas fund. After 68 years of relying on
male Santas for the street-comer collecting, the organiza
tion decided to use the comely young ladies who wear red
minidresses and tight red leotards. (AP Wirephoto)
FORT WORTH <■#*>—In a move
aimed a,t inspiring “esprit de
corps,” Coach Kerry Kirby says
he sheared about 15 athletes at
suburban Kennedale High School.
The mass haircut aroused the
ire of some parents, who Supt.
Barton Horton accused of “mak
ing a mountain out of a mole
hill.”
Nevertheless, he added, the
episode would not be repeated.
Kirby, 25, said Wednesday he
had suggested a month ago that
the athletes get their hair cut
shorter. Apparently the response
was unsatisfactory.
He lined up the boys Monday
during a physical education class
and attacked their locks with a
pair of thinning shears.
“The kids were in a jovial
mood,” said Kirby, in his first
year as football coach at Ken
nedale.
HORTON POINTED out that
none of the boys was forced to
get a haircut. He added, “I
haven’t seen a boy yet who was
disturbed about it.”
“I thought it was funny,” said
freshman athlete Rocky Combs,
who wore his hair neatly combed,
if shorter, Wednesday.
“Nothing looks worse than a
bunch of greased-up basketball
players,” said Marvin Raines,
who plays football. He sported
a fresh trim.
RAINES blamed the outcry on
a “bunch of big-mouthed par
ents” who he asserted were get
ting involved in a matter that is
“none of their business.”
“We haven’t had the winning-
est season in the world,” ob
served Supt. Horton, “but we
have had the spiritedest.”

Rainfall Nears
Record Amount
Bryan and College Station have
come within 4 1 / 6 inches of the
wettest year on record since
1889, counting rainfall through
Dec. 1.
The area, which is under a
rainfall runoff study by the
Meteorology Department at
A&M, has recorded varying
amounts at different stations.
At the department weather
station, automatic equipment tab
ulated the total for 1968 through
Nov. 30 as 56.17 inches, 4.58
short of the Weather Bureau
listing of 60.75 in 1900 and 59
per cent above normal. Bureau
records are complete from 1889.
Experiment Station sources
dating to 1916 show a 57.01 an
nual total for 1919, which al
ready has been surpassed by
most stations in the Burton
Creek watershed.
most powerful communications
satellite for launching tonight.
Intelsat 3, intended to double
transatlantic satellite telephone
and television links, is scheduled
to ride into space atop a three-
stage Delta rocket at 7:32 p.m.
It is to be placed in stationary
orbit 22,300 miles above the At
lantic Ocean off the coast of
Brazil.
The National Aeronautics and
Space Administration is launch
ing the satellite for the 63-nation
telecommunications satellite con
sortium for a fee of $4.7 million.
THE APOLLO 8 astronauts,
Air Force Col. Frank Borman,
Navy Capt. James A. Lovell Jr.
and Air Force Maj. William A.
Anders, climbed into a spacecraft
simulator this morning, adding
to the more than 250 hours each
has logged in the training de
vice.
NASA reported weather con
ditions for Saturday’s launching
were predicted to be satisfactory,
with considerable cloudiness, tem
perature in the 60s and moderate
winds. The forecast also called
for good conditions in the major
recovery areas.
The lengthy countdown, which
started Sunday night continued
to proceed flawlessly toward the
scheduled launch time of 7:51
a.m. EST Saturday.
Attention was focused on
checking systems of the giant
36-story-tall Saturn 5 rocket
which is to boost the astronauts
on their quarter-million-mile trip
to the moon. The first three days
of the countdown concentrated
on spacecraft systems.
BORMAN, Lovell and Anders
are to orbit the moon for 20
hours on Christmas Eve and early
Christmas Day, hoping to pave
the way for other astronauts to
land on the lunar surface next
year.
Psychology Head
Reports On Confab
Dr. William R. Smith reported
on the World Consultation of the
Center for International Manage
ment Studies in Geneva, Switz. to
the A&M Society for the Ad
vancement of Management Tues
day night.
Dr. Smith, psychology depart
ment head, said that the shortage
of qualified managers was wors
ening in the under-developed
countries. He related the Gross
National product to the avail
ability of management personnel.
Buck Schiwetz has brought his surpassing skill to the production of this
handsome 17 x 22-inch portfolio. In it are reproduced, in full color, paintings
of the six missions which have figured momentously in Texas history. Five
of the missions are located in San Antonio: San Antonio de Valero (better
known as the Alamo), San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo, Nuestra Sehora de la
Purfsima Concepcion de Acuna, San Francisco de la Espada, and San Juan
Capistrano. The other mission is in Goliad: Nuestra Senora del Espiritu
Santo de Zuniga.
Buck Schiwetz, a native of Texas, is a graduate of Texas A. & M. Univer
sity. He resides in the scenic Hill Country of Texas, near Hunt.
The first telephone directory in
Washington, D.C., was issued in
1878 and consisted of a single
page page listing 187 customers.
Persons who asked the operator
for “No. 1” were connected with
the White House. If they request
ed “No. 2,” they got the Senate
corridor of the U. S. Capitol.
Other subscribers included livery
stables and ice companies.
