I am forced to exclude men tion of A&M students because they made up less than ten per cent of the audience. This is un derstandable considering that there was a basketball game go ing on simultaneously. Employ ing my English 210 style of logic, I conclude that the student at this university is faced with a “cultural vacuum.” Remembering what happened at the Hungarian String Quartet performance a few months ago, I arrived at 7 p.m. to insure a front-row-center seat. The capa city crowd never arrived (there may have been a hundred people present for Monday’s perfor mance), but my early arrival al lowed me to observe the usual pre-show pageant, which consist ed of the oboist (Larry Thomp son) and the clarinetist (Richard Picker) entering the ballroom and inspecting their future stage. As usual there was that sick grin of despair when they gazed upon the richly colored, luxurous, acou stic damping curtain before and behind the stage. Both of them had to go up and touch it as if to attempt to dispel some heinous apparition. THEY THEN requested a pro gram. Of course their guides didn’t have one and I quickly and politely offered mine. With some reservation they accepted my blue sheet of paper and gave it a quick once-over. They decided that the basic information was correct, but wanted to know where the “program notes” were. I explained that such a thing was unheard-of here and we have to accept or reject all or any Showcase production in complete mi • Stationery, books, cards • baby albums • sho^ver invitations • baby announcements • shower centerpieces • napkins, cups, plates etc. AGGIELAND FLOWER AND GIFT SHOPPE 209 University Drive ignorance because the committee doesn’t think any of us could pos sibly know what we wanted to hear anyway. (Man, it’s Culture; go sop it up!) Mr. Oboe and Mr. Clarinet were, of course, dismayed and ex plained that nobody will know to laugh and when to look sad (an obvious insult to the audience that would allow any presenta tion to be brought to bear in such a shabby manner). To conclude the opening pageant, >Mr. Clarinet gave me an imploring look and said he hoped I would not he disappointed in their performance (sensing my disgust with the handling of it by the committee). I put on my best yard-and-a-half- through-the-line face and replied that there was little chance of my being disappointed. GENTLEMEN OF the Artists Showcase Committee: I have at my disposal the highlights (and many obscurities) of music from Dunstable to Orff, but when deal ing with a special field such as wind quintets you are apt to go beyond my perimeter. This hap pened to me Monday night and I was a far cry from being the only one left out in the audience. The least you could do would be to print a usable program rather than an applause guide. You will find an obsolete edition of Grove’s “Dictionary of Music and Musi cians” in the library; please use it before the next presentation. The Reicha Quintet (c. 1800, for those of you who missed it on the program) was nice but uninspiring. A dash of Mozart and a dash of Beethoven, but not a profound mixture. THE REMAINING three pieces were great fun, but modern music is alien to my provincial mind un less I am allowed to study it be forehand. The English horn in the Nielsen piece was a boon, but it was fleeting. Perhaps if the public had been forewarned we might have been better prepared to comprehend the more modern pieces. There was, however, an amus ing note. In the last piece pre sented (the Nielsen Quintett) there is a series of variations which comprise the final move ment during which the French horn (Leo Sacchi) has a solo which fades out with a da dum, da dum, etc. At the close of the final da dum, the 9:45 South bound Freight answered this clos ing call, in perfect tempo, with its own Blah doo. Neither the bassoonist (Richard Hall) nor the oboist had a reed in his mouth, thus sparing a fatality, but there was large scale mirth among the performers. Only Jan Cole, the flutist, kept her composure (This may have been the highlight of the evening). Finally, a word to the wise: if you go to hear a wind concert, do not sit on the front row. Every key-clack, slurp (the oboist was bad about this), breath and escapage of excess wind is aud ible, and, when unfamiliar with Hgjnusic^lMs^a^distraction^^ FORGET ME NOT !
