Aggie Fish Clinch Title With Win Over Yearling By RICHARD CAMPBELL The Texas A&M Fish, bolstered by a weak Texas kicking game, put on one of their famous fourth quarter defensive shows Friday to edge the Yearlings, 14- 13, and clinch the Southwest Conference freshman champion ship. In all, they blocked a punt, forced three Texas field goals to go awry and caused a missed extra point which was the mar gin they needed for the win. In the final stanza, the Year lings were forced to punt with a fourth down and 16 to go situ ation from their own 13. Tommy Woodard got off a 39-yarder but the play was called back because of a Texas offsides penalty. Woodard again dropped back to boot, this time from five yards deep in his own end zone, but he never got the punt away as Ed win Ebrom rushed in from the left side and blocked it. Middle guard Mike Muller pounced on the loose pigskin in the end zone for the touchdown. Billy Mar tin, a kicking specialist from Conroe booted the winning extra point but the game was far from over. In the first quarter, the Fish drew first blood as David Odom returned a Woodard punt 28 yards to the Texas 38. On the first play of the series, Fish quarterback Joe King stepped back into the pocket and fired a 38-yard bomb down the left side line to Dallas Bryan Adams speedster John Garner who latched onto the pass at the ten behind defender Tex Allshouse for the score. Martin converted and the Fish were ahead, 7-0. Later in the quarter however, the Yearlings rode the running of Bertelsen and Paine to move 48 yards in seven plays capped by quarterback Tony Adams’ four-yard ramble to even the score. After Mike Yudizky’s conversion it was 7-7. The second quarter belonged to the Yearlings as Adams hit pinpoint passes to Woodard and Tommy Lee. Bertelsen also add ed to his 81 first-half yards as the Yearlings moved 47 yards in nine plays to go ahead, 13-7. Adams got the score with a five- yard plunge but Yudizky’s at tempt was wide and the score remained 13-7 as the half ended. The active fourth quarter found the blocked punt coming before even a minute had expired and the Fish took the lead t stay, 14-13. With eight mimti left, the Yearlings had a % tained drive going from tka own 45 to the Fish 30 Adams was separated from tl) football and Fish linebacker Cl| ford Thomas fell on it to sfc the march. The balloting for offensive center came out in a dead heat— for Rodney Brand of Arkansas and Calvin Hunt of Baylor. The same thing happened in voting for fullback. Jackie Stewart of Texas Tech and Steve Worster of Texas ended in a tie. Mike Richardson, SMU’s bull- doggish halfback, won the other halfback spot alongside Gilbert, the SWC’s all - time leading ground gainer. Deryl Comer, Texas’ hard- blocking 210-pound junior, won the tight end job. At tackles, the balloting lined up Richard “Truck” Stevens of Baylor, a 235- pound linebacker’s nightmare and tough Terry May of SMU. At offensive guards, Jim Barnes of Arkansas and Don King of Texas Tech ran away with the most votes. On defense, the only sopho more to make the first team was Mike DeNiro of Texas A&M at defensive end. Richard Campbell, Texas Tech’s 225-pound junior from Matador, nailed down the other terminal spot. The tackles went to Texas’ dy namic duo of Loyd Wainscott and Leo Brooks. The guard positions went to Larry Adams of TCU and Rolf Krueger, A&M’s versatile defen sive lineman who can play sev eral spots in the trenches. Cliff Powell of Arkansas and Bill Hobbs of Texas A&M grab bed off the linebacking spots just ahead of a fast-closing Bruce Portillo of SMU. The three defensive backs se lected were Larry Alford of Tex as Tech, Jim Livingston of SMU and Gary Adams of Arkansas. Although Alford and Adams are primarily safeties the coaches gave them numerous votes and various positions in the defensive secondary. The kicking specialists on the team are Kenny Vinyard of Tex as Tech for the extra point and field goal booting duties and the punter is Steve O’Neal of A&M who has a knack of stopping the ball dead near the opponent’s goal. Montgomery is the sophomore- of-the-year and Gilbert, the player-of-the-year. ***** - , A LIVE JACKRABBIT David Odom, a 162-pound split end from Beaumont Forest Park High School, scooted 21 yards on this punt to the Texas 38 to set up the first Aggie Fish score in their 14-13 COD' quest of the Yearlings.
