Hargett Tops In Stallings’ Book
-
v ?< f
READY . . AIM ...
A&M’s Mr. Cool, Edd Hargett, gets ready to fire a bomb
in the Aggies 24-14 win over Rice Saturday. The senior
quarterback from Marietta already holds many Southwest
Conference national records and is rapidly closing in on
others. (Photo by Mike Wright)

“I don't think there is any in
the country better than Edd,”
says Texas A&M Coach Gene
Stallings about his record-break
ing, cool-headed quarterback Edd
Hargett. “If he doesn’t make
someone’s team (All-America),
it’ll be a great shame.”
Stallings is realistic enough to
recognize that won-lost records
have a lot to do with a player’s
making honor teams. “If Edd
were on a winning team or on a
good football team, he’d be a
cinch All-America. But, he led us
to the Southwest Conference title
and Cotton Bowl win last year
and we didn’t have a good team.
We just made a lot of big plays,
something we haven’t done this
season.”
What Stallings hesitates to
mention, for fear of it being taken
as an alibi, is the rash of injuries
that all but ruined his team this
year. Tailback Larry Stegent,
fullback Wendell Housley, wing-
back Bob Long, linebacker Bill
Hobbs, defensive tackle Harvey
Aschenbeck and split end Tommy
Maxwell—all of them first-class
players—have missed from one
to three full games this year. And
there are nearly a dozen others,
like offensive tackle Carl Gough,
out for the season with a knee
injury that required surgery, who
have been sidelined.
Yet, Hargett has had a sensa
tional year throwing the football.
Now, with the Texas game com
ing up on national TV Thanks
giving, the brilliant (142 I.Q.)
signal caller has these national
standings and SWC records in
hand.
NATIONAL ALL-TIME
Total Offense (career)
5,258 yards, ranks sixth now
and needs only 33 yards to
move into fifth ahead of Steve
Spurrier of Florida fame.
Passes Completed (career)
381 . . . ranks fourth now and
needs only 12 to pass Spurrier.
He is 24 behind second-place
Billy Stevens of University of
Texas at El Paso.
Passing Yardage (career)
5,158 yards . . . ranks third now
and is 314 yards behind second-
place Jerry Rhome of Tulsa.
Consecutive Passes
Without Interception
Hargett now has 171 in the last
SM games. The national mark
is 198 set by Rhome at Tulsa.
HARGETT’S SWC
CAREER RECORDS
Most Passed Attempted 776
Most Completions 381
Most Passing Yardage 5,158
Most Offensive Plays 1,037
Total Offense Yardage 5,258
He is now tied with TCU’s
famed Sammy Baugh with 38
career touchdown passes.
The SWC has produced such
great passers as Baugh, Bobhy
Layne, Don Meredith, Don Trull
and Terry Southall and yet Har
gett has passed all of them in all
categories of throwing the foot
ball.
It goes without saying that
Hargett owns all the A&M school
records in passing and total of
fense.
And, if honors are doled out on
individual performances, rather
than on team success, Hargett
must get serious consideration
from all the All-America teams.
