iophysicist To Speak CUT A relatively new field in the claiming and reuse of polluted rater, “Water Treatment by Electrophoresis,” will be a dis cussion highlight of the 13th an nual Conference on Water for Texas here November 25-26. Research biophysicist Milan Bier of Tucson, Ariz., will pre sent the lecture. Bier, associated with the Uni versity of Arizona and Veterans idministration Hospital, report- forced-flow electrophoresis has een applied to the purification of polluted waters from “a wide range of sources.” He identified them as being comprised of river and pond wa ter, floodwater, effluent of sew age treatment plants, and vari ous industrial wastes. Dr. Jack Runkles, acting direc tor of A&M’s Water Resources Institute and conference sponsor, pointed out “Bier has given par ticular attention to some prob lems specific for the arid South west” such as treatment of wa ters collected in catchment areas or impounded floodwaters. “THE METHOD HAS been found to be singularly effective in improving the quality of the treated water by completely elim inating particulate matter, such as silt, algae and bacteria, as well as radically decreasing col loidal impurities,” Bier reported. Runkles noted that ‘electro phoresis’ is the migration of elec trically charged colloidal parti cles in an electric field.” “It is well recognized as one of the most fruitful methods for the analysis and separation of complex biocolloidal systems,” Bier added.
