THE BATTALION Thursday, October 24, 1968 Page 6 College Station, Texas A&M’sHousley Revisits Scene Of Best Game Wendell Housley, the big, swift fullback from Richardson, returns to the scene of his greatest game this week when he and his Texas Aggies invade Waco to play the Baylor Bears. It was two years ago, on regional TV, when Housley was a sophomore talback. That after noon he set a school record with 33 carries in a workhorse per formance as the Aggies captured a nerve wracking 17-13 win. He g-ained 127 yards that afternoon and it was this game that aided greatly in his being named to some all-SWC teams. Housley was hurt much of his junior season but was fit as a fiddle on New Year’s afternoon and it was his two power runs off guard that put the icing on a 20-16 victory over Alabama in the Cotton Bowl. It was expected that the big blond would be ready for a tre mendous senior season to cap his career at Aggieland. But, during the first three days of fall prac tice, while the squad still was in shorts, Housley twisted a knee and had to sit out A&M’s first three games. He saw his first action when Larry Stegent was hurt early in the Texas Tech game and carried 19 times for 69 yards. Last Saturday night against TCU he carried 15 times for 37 yards. Neither of those two games are up to Housley’s usual perform ance but if his injured knee con tinues to improve he could break out of his running slump this week. A healthy Housley is as good a running back as there is in the SWC. He is 6-2 and 210 and has run a 9.7 in track since coming to A&M. He runs with great authority and bruises would-be tackiers. Noted as a ball carrier, Hous ley’s greatest asset as a fullback is his blocking. He is the best blocking back on the Aggie squad and it was his clearing block that sent tailback Jimmy Sheffield on a 19-yard TD run against Tech and on a 63-yard scamper against TCU. Housley would be a tremendous star in one-platoon football. Actu ally it was his defensive ability that first attracted recruiter Elmer Smith’s attention. Wendell rushed for 548 yards as a sophomore and netted 196 last year in limited action. With Baylor well rested after an off week, the Aggies likely will need an outstanding job from Housley this week as they seek to keep their SWC title hopes alive. Ths could be the week that the big Aggie warhorse really comes to life.
