LOOK OUT WALL STREET

New York for a walk down

BELFAST <A>) _ Police avert
ed a clash between Roman Cath
olic and Protestant demonstra
tors in this Northern Irish capi
tal today by persuading the Cath
olics to change the route of a
mass protest march by 1,500
Queen’s University students.
The Protestants, led by the
Rev. Ian Paisley, had threatened
a counterdemonstration in Shaf
tesbury Square to prevent the
Catholic students from entering
Belfast’s Protestant working
class quarter.
The Queen’s students marched
to protest alleged political dis
crimination against Roman Cath
olics and what they called police
brutality in Londonderry, where
96 persons were injured in week
end demonstrations.
Roman Catholic nationalists
want North Ireland’s six counties
joined with the Irish Republic to
the south. They have scheduled
a token strike Friday and an
other big demonstration in Lon
donderry Saturday.
William Craig, minister of
home affairs, said the London
derry demonstration will be
banned. The authorities permit
ted the Catholic students to
march in Belfast today on condi
tion they changed their route, but
banned Paisley’s counterdemon
stration.
The Protestant minister then
led 200 supporters to city hall,
where he told 2,000 bystanders
Premier Terence O’Neil should
be ousted for failing to prosecute
Catholic activists.
“They must be prosecuted,’’ he
said. “O’Neil must pack his bags
and go.”
61 Nations Send
Students To A&M
Texas A&M is fast becoming
a second United Nations if for
eign student enrollment is any
indication.
Sixty-one foreign nations are
represented on campus this se
mester with 611 international stu
dents enrolled in classes, reports
Foreign Student Advisor Bob
Melcher.
Texas A&M’s record enroll
ment of 12,592 was boosted this
fall by the foreign student en
rollment led, by six countries
sending 25 or more students, Mel
cher added.
The Dominican Republic is
again the leader in number of
students with 85. During the
spring term the Dominican Re
public had more students at A&M
than any other country as it did
in the fall 1967.
Other leaders include China
with 53, followed by Pakistan
with 51, India with 47 and Mexico
with 51. Tunisia has 25.
Countries with 15 or more stu
dents registered include Argen
tina, Canada, Iran, Korea, Pana
ma and Venezuela.
Almost half of the foreign stu
dents—275 of them— are study
ing for graduate degrees. Jun
iors represent the highest num
ber of undergraduate students
with 90, folowed by 83 fresh
men, 72 seniors and TH sopho
mores. There are 20 special stu
dents.
Not returning after the spring
semester were students from Al
geria, Arabia, Holland, Malaysia
and Paraguay, all of whom were
graduate students. Only one coun
try with an undergraduate, Trin
idad, is not represented.
New countries this fall with
