Reserves To Train At Brayton Field Fire School
,
Texas A&M will add a new
dimension to its military instruc
tional status this month.
Soldiers of the 420th Engineer
Brigade will train at the univer
sity’s Brayton Field Aug. 10-24.
Personnel of the Texas Engineer
ing Extension Service will in
struct the 463rd Engineer Pla
toon of Huntsville in firefighting,
rescue and emergency operations.
The newly-organized platoon of
one officer and 23 enlisted men
will be trained by members of the
Firemen’s Training School head
ed by Chief Henry D. Smith.
Training was contracted to A&M
by the U. S. Army in cooperation
with the Fourth Army.
First Lt. William V. Wagner’s
platoon is one of the cellular units
of the 420th, commanded by Brig.
Gen. Joe G. Hanover of Bryan.
General Hanover and President
Earl Rudder are expected to ob
serve the platoon during its two-
week summer training, according
to Maj. William Ross, brigade
operations officer. Fourth Army
officials may also visit.
“We feel that by the end of the
two weeks, if the men master the
training, they should be MOS
(military occupational specialty)
qualified,” Major Ross said.
He indicated 102 hours of
training scheduled by Johnny
Rauch and school instructors sur
passes the amount soldiers re
ceive through normal Army train
ing programs.
“There’s only one volunteer
fireman with any sort of training
in the group,” the major added.
“The nature of training Chief
Smith has arranged should make
the platoon capable of going on
active duty and fulfilling it’s
mission: providing the equiva
lent of a fire station for a divi
sion-size camp,” Major Ross went
on.
Rauch said training will stress
“getting their hands dirty. Learn
ing is best accomplished by doing
and we’re going to have them
doing.”
He said the GIs will study fire
chemistry, tactics and prevention,
fire-fighting during civil disturb
ances, use and maintenance of
equipment, including rope,
hitches, nozzles and appliances,
extinguishes, ladder, hose, protec
tive breathing apparatus and
pumpers.
The soldiers will learn rescue
carries and drags, fight petro
leum, structural and LPG fires
and receive instruction in brush
and range firefighting. Kenneth
Burton of the fire control depart
ment, Texas Forest Service, will
assist in the latter.
Chief Smith has assigned
Rauch, James R. Dobson, Tom
Robinson and W. B. Dorman to
the two-week training program.
“Others will probably ass j s ,
from time to time as needetp
Rauch added.
