Maurer Presented
Award At Vet Meet
Dr. Fred D. Maurer, associate
dean of the College of Veterinary
Medicine, has been presented the
1968 12th International Veteri
nary Congress Prize for his “out
standing contributions to the in
ternational advancement of vet
erinary medical science.”
The award was made Tuesday
during the American Veterinary
Medical Association’s 105th an
nual meeting in Boston, Mass.
Dr. Maurer has been associate
dean at A&M since 1964 and is
widely known for his efforts to
show how foreign animal diseases
can be hazards to the United
States livestock industry and to
the world’s food supply.
For more than 20 years before
his retirement in 1964 as a col
onel in the U.S. Army Veterinary
Corps, he was engaged in some
form of foreign animal disease
control. His work brought him
two army commendation medals
— the Legion of Merit and the
Surgeon General’s “A” rating for
research competence.
The army citations recognized
his work in fighting such foreign
animal diseases as African swine
fever in Spain, horse piroplas-
mosis when it first invaded Flor
ida, and the Middle East outbreak
of African horse sickness.
During his army career, he
served at the Armed Forces In
stitute of Pathology as chief of
its Basic Science Division, Vir
ology Division and the Veterinary
Pathology Division.
He is past president of the
American College of Veterinary
Pathologists, one of seven spe
cialty boards recognized by the
AVMA for certification of vet
erinarians.
The associate dean is currently
chairman of both the Equine Divi
sion of the Morris Animal Foun
dation and the AVMA Research
Council, and is active in 15 other
professional organizations.
Dr. Maurer was given the “1961
Alumnus of the Year” award by
the Washington State University
College of Veterinary Medicine,
from which he graduated in 1937.

Mommy, I love you.
Vm glad Vm alive.
It’s fun to run and
play and laugh and
dance.
It’s hard to stand still
and listen.
Mommy, I love you.
Thank you for taking
care of me. Thank you
for cookies and milk and
bread.
Please give me a dime
for Sunday School. I like
Sunday School. We sing
and laugh and learn
about God.
Mommy, 1 love you.
And so on and on she prattles in her own innocent and
naive way. Soon, however, her questions will become more
complex and her parents will need all the love and wisdom
they can obtain.
Fortunately, we as parents are not alone in this endeavor.
The Church stands ready and anxious to help us train our
children. Through worship, study and meditation we can
learn to know what God requires of us. Come to the church
of your choice this Sunday and every Sunday.

THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . .
. . . ALL FOR THE CHURCH
The Church is the greatest factor
on earth for the building of charac
ter and good citizenship. It is a
storehouse of spiritual values.
Without a strong Church, neither
democracy nor civilization can
survive. There are four sound
reasons why every person should
attend services regularly and sup
port the Church. They are: (l)For
his own sake. (2) For his children’s
sake. (3) For the sake of his com
munity and nation. (4) For the
sake of the Church itself, which
needs his moral and material sup
port. Plan to go to church reg
ularly and read your Bible daily.
