Second Session PE Courses Announced
Physical education courses for
the second session of summer
school have been announced by
Dr. Carl W. Landiss, head of the
department of Health and Physi
cal Education.
Classes meeting 8-9 a.m., Mon
day through Friday, will be
springboard diving and weight
lifting. Classes from 10 a.m. to
11 a.m. will offer bowling, and
classes between 12 p.m. and 1
p.m. will offer both tennis and
bowling.
Classes meeting Monday
through Thursday from 2 p.m.
until 3:15 p.m. will include tennis
and either bowling or golf, de
pending upon the other class
loads, Landiss said.
Texas A&M’s Texas Transpor
tation Institute is stepping up
its auto skidding studies in the
wake of an increased number of
accidents during the recent incle
ment weather which has plagued
most of the state.
TTI Director Jack Keese said
the institute has been engaged
in skid research for several years
but is now proposing an increased
effort with a broadened scope.
Keese noted TTI previously
conducted studies with the Texas
Highway Department to improve
skid resistance of paved surfaces.
“We plan to submit new pro
posals to the Highway Depart
ment and also seek sponsorship
from other sources for certain
phases of the work,” the TTI
director said.
He emphasized that wet pave
ment is just one of the aspects
involved in a skid research proj
ect. Also to be considered are
slick tires, the vehicle’s stability
and the actions of the driver.
“A sudden or violent maneuver
can be made on dry pavement
without too much difficulty,”
Keese pointed out, “but during
periods of inclement weather,
these same maneuvers at the
same speed may be sufficient to
cause a driver to lose control.”
In the driver actions phase of
the project, particular attention
will be directed to turning and
passing maneuvers, acceleration
and deceleration and braking,
Keese added.
He said the skid tests will be
made at the proving grounds of
the TTI Highway Safety Research
Center.
