Dairy Club Honored At Meet
A&M Thai Student Takes ‘Break’
The Texas A&M Dairy Science
Club was honored during the
American Dairy Science Associ
ation annual meeting just ended
in Columbus, Ohio.
The club ranked third in na
tional competition based upon its
local activities in the 1967-68
school year, its participation in
the ADSA Student Affiliate
Branch, and its scrapbook exhib
ited at Columbus.
An honorable mention certifi
cate for A&M was accepted by
Leonard Switzer of Mesquite,
junior dairy science major and
1968-69 club president.
Club sponsors are Dr. Charles
W. Dill and Dr. Gary Lane of
the A&M Animal Science Depart
ment.
Animal Science Department
representatives attending the an
nual meeting were Dr. Don
Weseli, Dr. R. E. Leighton, Dr.
Henry Randolph and Ronald
Richter in addition to Switzer.
State TIL Winner
To Attend A&M
A Thorndale resident, William
M. Theis, is winner of a $4,000
Texas Interscholastic League
Foundation scholarship to Texas
A&M.
Theis, a senior at Thorndale
High School, won the TIL prize
when he captured first place in
the Texas High School Science
Contest for 1967-68.
Funds for the $1,000 per year
award are provided by the Moody
Foundation.
A&M Student Aid Director Rob
ert Logan said Theis will enroll
this fall.
Veerapun Putamanonda may
have problems with the bulkiness
of his baggage for his first re
turn home from Texas A&M in
more than two years.
The Aggie plans to take his
senior boots to Bangkok, Thai
land, to wear with his uniform at
home.
An Army ROTC cadet and me
chanical engineering major. Veer
apun (or Tom as his classmates
call him) is taking two-months
“leave” from classes July 15.
“I NEED a break,” he grinned.
Tom has been going to classes
regularly—fall, spring and sum
mer—since enrolling at Texas
A&M in September, 1966. The
24-year-old cadet completed his
freshman year at Norwich Uni
versity.
The son of Royal Thai Army
Gen. Thanom Putamanonda is
studying under Thai army con
tract and will be commissioned a
second lieutenant in his country’s
service upon graduation.
“I hope to go to engineer of
ficer basic and plan to attend
airborne and Ranger schools in
the U. S. before I go back to
Thailand to stay,” the quiet, soft-
spoken young man said.
MEANWHILE, he plans to en
joy the vacation and his senior
year of studies at A&M. Puta
manonda drills with Company D-
1 in A&M’s Corps of Cadets.
During Christmas, Thanksgiving
and Easter breaks he is “adopted”
by the family of his roommate,
Walter Dabney of Dallas.
Highlighting his off-campus
activities have been camping and
fishing trips to Colorado.
During his summer leave, Tom
plans to relax with his folks,
visit relatives and tour Bang
kok, military bases at the South
east Asian country’s capital and
the Armed Forces Academy, prep
school for the U. S.-sympathetic
nation’s Army, Air Force and
Navy academies.
“Army and Air Force officers
I’ve talked to in the A&M mili
tary department tell me there
have been a lot of changes at
home,” he said. Putamanonda
also plans to contact Maj. Leo
Magers, Air Force officer at
A&M now assigned at Royal Thai
AB.
Tom said the un-Texas-like
recent rains have made A&M
feel like home.
