You’ll Need A Good Excuse Normally, you wouldn’t expect college housing office personnel to worry about snorers and light sleepers. Not so at Texas A&M. Housing Manager Allan Made- ley tries to chuckle and frown at the same time when he talks about unusual happenings in his bailiwick. “You won’t believe some of the things that happen,” he said. “Just the other day a man wrote in for a summer room reserva tion. He emphasized he was such a terrible snorer that he needed a private room so as not to dis turb others.” “We were pondering his pro posal when another letter arrived, this one from his wife,” Madeley laughed. “She testified her hus band’s snoring claim was valid. He direly needs a room by him self,” she said. THE MAN is getting the pri vate room. Light sleepers also cause hous ing office personnel insomnia. “They say they need a private room because they’re light sleep ers,” Madeley said. “Most claim to be early risers and wouldn’t want to disturb a roommate. Adults are worse than younger students. It’s common for younger hoys who don’t smoke to ask for a “roomie” who share their dislike for nicotine. Assignments Clerk Ruth Novo- sad noted that architecture ma jors usually ask for a roommate who also is studying architecture. “That’s fine with other students who often request they not be as signed to a room with architec ture students because the archi tecture hopefuls have a lot of supplies and often stay up all night studying and talking,” she explained. “IN THE SUMMER,” Mrs. No- vosad continued, “some boys jok ingly ask to be assigned to a dormitory which houses girls. We just laugh and say ‘sorry about that!’ or something similar.” Room clerks say many students request rooms with windows on the north, south, east or west side, despite virtually all A&M dorms being air-conditioned. Madeley, a 1941 A&M graduate, has worked in the housing office 22 years, but he’s never lived in a dorm, even when he was a stu dent. His family moved to Cbllege Station from Palestine when he was a year old. He has been here since, except for a four-year Army hitch. Oftimes at| Aggieland, Madeley takes a heavier shelling than he did as a WW II artillery captain in Europe. “HERE’S A DOOZIE for you,” Madeley recalled with a hint of sympathy in his voice. “We get a letter every semester from a man in Louisiana who apparently wants to study here. Then, just before the semester starts, we get a letter from him asking that we cancel the reservation. We hope he makes it someday. This has been going on for years.” “A student with flat feet asked recently to be moved to a dorm closer to classes so he wouldn’t have to walk so much,” Madeley said, “But he didn’t want to be in an air-conditioned dormitory. Anywhere we put him won’t be more than 50 yards closer to class than his present dorm. We may be able to put him on a ground floor. Maybe that will help some.” Mrs. Novosad pretty well summed up the feelings of the office force when she commented: “Some students are so easy to please. Others want to change rooms every few days or weeks because they feel everybody is out of step hut them.” “Ninety per cent of the students are a joy to work with,” Mrs. Novosad grinned. “It’s the other 10 per cent that cause some dan dy headaches.” SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES Project engineer: BSME. no experience necessary $12,000.
