Fish Registration Sees Use Of Automated System
Texas A&M freshmen, normal
ly called “fish,” will be guinea
pigs this summer for the state’s
first fully automated college or
university registration system.
If the technique checks out
during summer conferences for
new fall students, noted Regis
trar H. L. Heaton, it will be in
stalled for all regular semesters,
beginning at mid-term.
One of the more obvious ad
vantages of automated registra
tion, Heaton pointed out, is elim
ination of long lines for students
signing for courses each semes
ter.
The system actually eliminates
the standard two-day registra
tion period, he added, substitut
ing pre-registration in which a
student enrolls at his convenience
during a six-week period the pre
ceding semester.
“A STUDENT could conceiv
ably be anywhere in the country
Sunday, the day before the
semester starts, and be in class
Monday,” Heaton observed.
Associate Dean Charles Pin-
nell, who organized computer
aspects of the program said the
most significant advantage of
the new system is its emphasis
on faculty counseling.
“Students will have to meet
face-to-face with their advisers
to devise their schedules for the
next s e m e s t e r,” Dr. Pinnell
stressed.
“This automated system will
come nearer than any other meth
od of assuring the student he
gets the courses he needs —
when he needs them,’ he added.
A&M’s IBM 360/65 computer
will be programmed to keep a
running account of the number
of students enrolling in each
course and divide them equally
among the individual classes
planned for the course.
“Every student will thus have
an equal opportunity for place
ment in one of the choice time
slots, whether he registers first
or last,” Dr. Pinnel said. The
system also will allow the admin
istration to add more classes in
advance if the number of stu
dents requesting a particular
course exceeds expectations.
THE COMPUTER will “build”
a schedule for each student on
the basis of data compiled during
the student-counselor conference,
Dr. Pinnell explained, and then
figure all the financial consider
ations — room and board, tuition,
lab fees and such variables as
credit for scholarships.
An itemized fee statement is
forwarded to the student, who
returns his remittance and is
promptly provided his class
schedule for the next semester.
A&M began planning its auto
mated registration system two
years ago and patterned it after
a similar program at Purdue.

Riot Control Aids
“Are any of you afraid of this
stuff?”
Gene Jones, a veteran law en
forcement officer now a repre
sentative for a chemical company,
quizzed 40 law enforcement offi
cers at Texas A&M before acti
vating a riot control smoke bomb
known simply as CS.
Nobody set a speed record
speaking up in response to his
query.
Jones, principal instructor for
a two-day school explaining use
of scientific aids in controlling
civil disturbances, pulled a pin on
the smoke bomb container and a
brisk southerly breeze whipped
smoke onto a dozen volunteers.
Seconds later, the lawmen were
racing for clear air. Jones smiled
sympathetically.
“If you get a whiff of this
stuff,” he explained, “you lose all
respect for your fellow man. Your
only thought is to get out of it.
I’ve been in it about 35 times and
still can’t stay.”
“When officers use this to
disperse unruly crowds,” Jones
continued, “they had better leave
an avenue of escape for the people
or they will trample each other
trying to get out.”
The school, which ended Tues
day at A&M’s Research Annex
five miles west of Bryan, was
hosted by the Police Training
Division of A&M’s Engineering
Extension Service.
Ira Scott, police training 'co
ordinator for A&M, said the
school marks a first at Aggieland.
“We have had some gas demon
strations in extension schools at
Howard County Junior College at
Big Spring,” he recalled, “but
this is the first time most of the
officers here had been subjected
to use of gases. It opened a lot
of eyes and unveiled some pos
sible problems which might de
velop in actual confrontation with
a mob.
“Changing of wind currents
may turn the tables on law offi
cers trying to break up a mob,”
Scott confided. “Also, rioters
might pick up a smoke bomb and
throw it back at the lawmen.”
Use of MACE, a non-lethal
mob deterrent, drew keen interest
from law enforcement officers
from virtually every area of the
state. One volunteer who had
been daubed with a minute
amount of the fluid smiled
through tears and commented:
“It’s like a Mexican plate lunch
or an acre of garlic.”
Jones, former FBI agent with
30 years experience in law en
forcement, said MACE was used
quite effectively last year in riot
control at Berkeley, Calif.
“The federal government is
doing a lot of research right now
on riot control chemicals,” he re
marked “Soap machines, bubble
machines, instant banana peels
and high frequency radio waves
are just a few of the deterrents
being studied.”
Jones travels throughout the
nation to demonstrate use of riot
control equipment and supplies
for the George F. Cake Company
of Berkeley.
