Lake Sommerville Project
Subject Of Grad Students
A group of Texas A&M gradu
ate students has just completed a
semester-long class project which
provides a master proposal for
development of the Lake Somer
ville area.
The group, made up of archi
tecture and landscape architec
ture and recreation and parks
students, concentrated on princi
ples of design, travel, tourism
and recreation for the lake. They
were taught by Dr. Clare A. Gunn
of the Recreation and Parks De
partment.
The final project plan covers
an overall combination of sepa
rate developments needed for an
estimated total of 2,000 persons
on any one day, 20,000 persons
for peak days, and 40,000 for
special events.
INCLUDED ARE special activ
ity areas, such as a primary tour
ist service center, a second home
subdivision, a resort-convention
center, a boating-picnicking com
plex, sightseeing tours and a
fishing complex.
The project’s approach is based
upon tourism-recreation research
which Gunn conducted in Michi
gan and Hawaii before he came
to Texas A&M.
“Most training in the past,’’
Gunn said, “approaches develop
ment from strictly a park, recre
ation area, or a hotel, motel and
restaurant business point of view.
What is needed is an approach
that combines the many parts of
development because this is the
real life happening today.”
To add to the challenge of to
tal land design, the students in
cluded the town of Somerville in
the overall proposal. Informa
tion, interviews and several
guided tours were provided by
the Corps of Engineers, develop
ers of the reservoir.
Gunn divided the semester’s
work into four phases. Students
studied in teams and as individ
uals. As more emphasis was
placed on aesthetics and artistic
design as on physical functional
aspects.
IN THE FIRST phase, the
students researched the area, the
visitor characteristics and the
land ownership patterns.
“The greatest needs today are
creativity and innovation. These
are the unique contributions of
designers. However, their ef
forts can be more appealing and
more useful if based upon sound
study of facts,” Gunn pointed
out.
Climate, topography, soils, wa
ter resources, wildlife and vege
tation were among the natural
resources studied. Also investi
gated were characteristics of us
ers of Lake Somerville and other
Texas reservoirs, economic devel
opment, history and legends,
aesthetic properties and geo
graphic position.
The second phase was the syn
thesis of the research to deter
mine its meaning in terms of
travel, tourism and recreation
expansion. Individual student
conclusions were drawn here.
PREPARATION of a prelim
inary program for development
was the third phase. The value
of idea interchange between the
two types of students was evi
dent at this stage.
“The recreation and parks stu
dents utilized their backgrounds
to plan for what they felt should
and could be done,” Gunn ex
plained. “The design students con
ceived ideas on how and where
these things could be accomplished
for best land use and enjoyment
for future visitors.”
Narrowing and refining solu
tions into one overall project
plan was the final step.
“This has been the most excit
ing part of the project because it
meant considerable give and take
among the highly specialized stu
dents, as well as making use of
the research data.”

WASHINGTON UP) — The
Pentagon’s draft calls, which be
gan shooting up in January and
peaked at 48,000 in April, con
tinued to slide down Wednesday
with a request for 15,000 Army
recruits in July.
At the same time, the Defense
Department said the Army finds
it needs 9,500 fewer men in June
than expected, so the draft call
for that month is being reduced
from 29,500 to 20,000. It was
explained that the Army over
estimated the number of men
who will be discharged during
the month.
The 15,000 July request is the
lowest since the 11,400 of April
last year. Draft calls rose
sharply at the start of this year
because so many called in the
Vietnam buildup two years ago
were completing their compul
sory service.
But now that that cycle is com
plete, the Pentagon said lower
draft calls can be expected dur
ing the second half of 1968.
The changing draft picture
comes at a time when 39,000 Re
serves and National Guardsmen
are being called up.
Air Reservists, air Guardsman
and naval air Reservists totaling
14,787 were mobilized Jan. 26
shortly after the North Koreans
seized the U. S. intelligence ship
Pueblo and its crew.
Then a month ago about 24,500
Reservists and National Guards
men were ordered to report in
30 days. About 20,000 of those
joined the active force this week,
forming some 87 units from 34
states. Another 3,600 individuals
needed to fill out units are to
show up June 15.
The callups this year have run
this way: January, 34,000; Feb
ruary, 23,300; March, 41,000;
April, 48,000; May, 45,900; June
20,000; July, 15,000. The 48,000
April total was near the highest
Vietnam callup of 49,200 in Octo
ber 1966.
YMCA Selects
120 Counselors
For Fish Camp
Sophomores, juniors and sen
iors — 120 of them — have been
selected as Texas A&M counsel
ors for the YMCA’s “Fish” camp
this fall.
Selection Chairman David
Howard of Houston said the camp
will be conducted Sept. 7-10 at
Lakeview Methodist Assembly
grounds near Palestine.
Howard predicted more than
400 entering freshmen chosen
from top levels of high school
graduating classes throughout
the state will participate.
Speakers include A&M profes
sors, student leaders and minis
ters from Bryan and College Sta
tion, he said.
Howard said freshmen attend
ing the camp often become stu
dent leaders at A&M. And coun
selors, he observed, are chal
lenged to become better students
and more effective leaders.

Engineers Begin
Auto Tire Tests
Engineers at Texas A&M’s
Texas Transportation Institute
begin tests this week for the Na
tional Bureau of Standard’s pro
gram establishing safety and
performance ratings for auto
mobile tires.
Dr. C. V. Wootan, associate
TTI director, said the traction
characteristic studies will be con
ducted under a $70,000 contract
awarded last month.
He noted TTI just completed
preliminary evaluations of the
cars and types of pavements to
be used in the tests.
Wootan said the initial tests
will be witnessed by representa
tives of the NBS headquarters in
Washington, D. C., and Davidson
Laboratories of Stevens Insti
tute of Technology, Hoboken,
N.J.
The TTI official emphasized
NBS personnel will conduct the
actual tire ratings.
“Our role will be to develop
criteria for establishing test to
measure traction characteristics,”
Wootan explained.
Tire traction is one of five
general areas being explored in
the tire evaluation project order
ed by the Department of Trans
portation’s National Highway
Safety Bureau.
