Randy Matson and Curtis Mills,
perhaps Texas A&M’s most well
known senior and freshman, re
spectively, will don the uniform
of the Houston Striders this
weekend.
The occasion is the Striders’
Invitational Meet Saturday in
Houston’s Jeppesen Stadium. Top
amateur teams from throughout
the nation will compete for med
als at the meet, including armed
forces and California squads.
MATSON, fresh from his vic
tory over Dave Maggard and
George Woods in California’s San
Antonio Invitational, is looking
at the meet as tune-up for the
Amateur Athletic Union Cham
pionships and the Olympic Trials
the last two weekends in June.
The world record-holder began
his serious training a few weeks
ago and has been working out
six days a week with an emphasis
on the weights. The main concern
of Matson at present is of hitting
a peak too early in the season.
Matson won the California
meet with a Gd-lOVz toss while
Maggard threw 65-10 and Woods
of Southern Illinois threw 65-9.
Matson has said that expects a
battle between himself, Neil
Steinhauer, Woods and Maggard
for the three spots on the U. S.
Olympic Team.

DALLAS (A>>—Jay Collins, All-
Southwest Conference defensive
end and winner of Rice Univer
sity’s coveted Bob Quinn Award,
was announced Thursday as the
school’s athlete of the year.
He will represent Rice at the
annual Southwest Conference
Lettermen’s Association awards
luncheon here May 16. Each of
the eight conference members
designate an athlete of the year
to be honored.
Previously named were Greg
Pipes of Baylor, Gary Overbeck
of Texas and John Scovell of
Texas Tech.
Collins, co-captain of last year’s
team, made excellent classroom
grades while majoring in engi
neering. He also participated in
campus student government ac
tivities.
SCHOOL OF HARD “KNUCKS”
Atlanta Braves catcher Charley
Lau, in discussing how to catch
the knuckle-ball in the current
issue of SPORTS Magazine, says:
“There are two schools of
though on catching the knuckler.
Unfortunately, neither of them
works.”

Without making
it smart.
The new '68 Norelco Tripleheader 35T
gives you a shave so close, we dare any blade
to match it.
And it won’t nick or scrape either. Let
this be a lesson to you: in independent lab
oratory tests this Norelco Tripleheader
Speedshaver®—with floating Microgroove™
heads, rotary blades and pop-up trimmer —
shaved as close or even closer than a leading
stainless steel blade 2 out of every 3 times.
What more could you want? Maybe the new
Norelco Rechargeable Tripleheader 45CT.
Same great Norelco shave and features.
Works with or without a cord. And this Pow
erhouse delivers nearly twice as many
shaves per charge as any other re
chargeable. More features, too, in
cluding a 115/220 voltage selec
tor so you can really shave any
where. Let that be
another lesson.

Woods is scheduled to throw
against the former Pampa star
in Houston as is high school sen
sation Sammy Walker.
Walkqf, of Dallas Samuell, is
the only schoolboy in history to
break the 70’ barrier and holds
the world schoolboy record at
over 72. It will be the first time
for Walker to ever throw the
16 pound ball in competition al
though he does practice with it.
MILLS will be making his first
appearance since finishing second
at the SWC Meet in the 440.
Mills ran his career best of 46.1
in the Fort Worth Meet while
running behind Dave Morton who
was timed in 45.5.
Besides competing in the 440,
the former Lufkin athlete will
run the leadoff lap for the
Striders in the mile relay. During
the season, Mills paced the Aggie
mile relay team to a best time
of 3:09.8 and a third place spot
in the conference meet.
Other Aggies competing in the
Jeppesen meet will be Martin
Rollins, the SWC pole vault cham
pion, and Jack Abbott, hurdler.
Abbott recorded the confer
ence’s third best season time in
the 120-yard hurdles with a 14.2.
ROLLINS became the Aggies
first 16 foot pole vaulter with a
16-1effort in the team’s first
meet of the season. The initial
effort stood up all season as the
best in the SWC.
A 15-8 mark gave the Aggie
senior from Alabama the SWC
championship in his specialty.
