Are grackles friends or foes of farmers and ranchers? Dr. Keith Arnold, assistant pro fessor of wildlife science at Texas A&M seeks the answer through research supported by A&M and the U. S. Hatch Fund. “Some authorities say grackles, members of the blackbird family, cause a minimum of $6 million crop damage in Texas alone,” Ar nold said. “They are prevalent in a lot of other states.” “We are finding that grackles eat a lot of moths and insect lar vae,” he continued. “They feed mostly on things on the ground because they are slow fliers and can’t catch speedier insects like mosquitos.” Arnold said grackles may do more good for farmers and ranch ers by helping control the insect population. “What would happen to com, rice and other big grain crops if the grackles didn’t eat insect larvae?” he pondered. If Arnold’s idea that the birds are helpful proves true, it’s his task to explain to grain growers and suggest they find some meth od to scare grackles away from crops rather than destroying them. Arnold and graduate student Walter Davis of Irving are hand ing grackles in the Bryan-College Station area this spring. “We want to see if they show up in roosts here this winter,” Arnold commented. As a last resort, Gibbons wm Clark a letter and hoped for tk best. “After that, I just sat and wait ed and got very frustrated,’’ Gil bons recalled. “Had visions oi him taking another job befoit I had the opportunity to contact him.” Just when Gibbons had all but given up, he received a call froc Mrs. D.
