Page 4 College Station, Texas Wednesday, May 1, 1968 THE BATTALION ■rs» In SWC Track Meet Aggie Tracksters Picked Fourth By JOHN PLATZER A panel of five Southwest Con ference writers have picked the Aggies for a fourth place finish in this weekend’s track and field meet in Ft. Worth. Texas is the consensus choice with a predicted total of 54 Mj points followed by Rice and Bay lor with 54 each and the Aggies with 39 V2. MARTIN ROLLINS and George Resley are the only members of Coach Charley Thomas’ team rat ed first in their specialities. Res ley is favorite in the shot put while Rollins is expected tp win the pole vault. Resley’s best throw to date is 57.4 while teammate Ronny Lightfoot, who is picked for third, has a top mark of 56-6%. Ronnie Mercer of Texas Tech, who has a top throw of 57-7%, is the sec ond place choice. The top performance by Rollins was in the team’s first meet of the season when he cleared 16-1%. He won the Drake Relays last weekend with a 15-6 vault. Two freshmen, Curtis Mills and Kelvin Korver, are picked for second place honors in the meet. MILLS WILL be the busiest Aggie at the meet competing in the 440 and 220 as well as the 440 and mile relays. He is picked second in the 440 ahead of Rice’s Conley Brown and behind Dave Morton of Texas. Despite a SWC best of 169-4 in the discus, Korver is rated num ber two in the event. Gerald Holtzman of Rice, who has a 168-5 effort, is the top choice. Both Aggie relay teams are picked for third. The 440 team of Gary Abernathy, Mills, Tom Cilio and Jack Abbott is rated behind Rice and Baylor. Rice has a best time of 40.6 while Baylor’s is 40.9 and the Aggies’ is 41.1. THE MILE team of Mills, Steve Bancroft, Mike Boyd, Willie Rod riguez or Robert Vaughan is picked 1 behind Texas and Rice.
