Over the weekend, the Aggies, now 19-7 for the year, took two out of three games from the Southern Methodist Mustangs at Dallas. Onj Friday, the two teams split a doubleheader, with SMU winning the opener 9-6 and the Aggies bounced back in the night cap 8-1 behind 1 a six-hitter by Rick Schwartz. In Saturday’s game, the Maroon and White put 10 runs across the plate in the eight inning to win 10-3. WHILE THE Aggies were at Dallas, first place Texas was at Rice and second place Texas Christian visited fourth place Baylor. Both Texas and TCU swept their two-game series and as a result, the standings did not change. Texas, enjoys the top spot at 12-4, TCU is 10-5 and the Ag gies are 8-5. Baylor, was elimin ated from contention, with the double loss to the Horned Frogs. SAFE AT THIRD Aggie infielder Eddie Vaughn slides into third safely dur ing the Aggies’ 10-run Saturday rally against Southern Methodist at Dallas. Coach Tim Chandler gives Vaughn the ‘hit the dirt’ sign as Mustang third sacker Billy Jenkins waits for the throw. The Aggies won 10-3. Photo by Mike Wright) TCU, at this point, seems k have a good chance for a tie foi the championship, at the least They finish their season thij weekend, as last place Text Tech comes into Fort Worth foi a three-game series. TEXAS, MUST now wait two weeks, before their season-ending two-game series with the Aggie; at Austin. The Aggies, have i two-game set with Rice at Kyle Field this weekend before the final two with the Longhorns, The Frogs must sweep Tedi (who only have won just tw conference games) to stay inm. tention. Then, a split by the Ag. gies and Texas or a sweep by tie Aggies would assure TCU of j tie. Texas, of course, only hai to win one of the Aggie games, to clinch a tie for the title. THIS THEN, puts the lion 1 ! share of the pressure on the Ma, roon and White. They cannot af. ford another loss. If they aplit with Rice, that would mean t sweep of Texas to stay alive, However, even if this situatios does occur, a three-game win by TCU would eliminate the Aggies Therefore, Chandler’s charges must win the remaining four games ‘or else.’ Hitting continued to be the Ay gies’ strong point in the SMI series. In Friday’s doubleheader the Aggies, who lead the SWCin hitting, rapped out 18 hits, SMU PITCHER Randy Moseley held the Aggies to one hit for seven innings in Saturday’s game However, this drought endei quickly in the eighth-inning rally as the Aggies pounded out nir- hits to score ten runs. In the pro cess, three other pitchers joined Moseley in the showers during the Aggie surge. Rocky Thompson, who contri buted to the rally with a singlf and a run-scored, picked up tki victory in relief of starter Doug Rau. In Weekend Track Action Rollins, Matson Record Wim By JOHN PLATZER Martin Rollins, the Southwest Conference’s top pole vaulter, won the Aggie’s only first in the Drake Relays at Des Moines, Iowa Sat urday. Rollins, who has a season best of 16-1%, cleared 15-6 for the top spot in the meet. The Aggies came away with fifth in the shot at Drake as George Resley had a best throw of 56-7. While Resley was throwing the shot in Iowa, Randy Matson was re-asserting his dominance in the event in California. Matson heaved the 16-pound iron ball 69-10 to win the event and the Outstand ing Field Athlete Award at the Mt. San Antonio Relays in Wal nut, California Saturday. GOLF The Aggie golf team remained in second place in the SWC with a 6-0 sweep of Rice Saturday. The Aggies finished conference competition with a 28%-13% rec ord. TENNIS Coach Omar Smith’s tennis team is in action at home again this afternoon with Stephen F. Austin State after splitting with Texas yesterday 3-3. Jon Ragland and Bruce Crum ley won single matches for the Aggies while Joe Tillerson ami Mike Hickey lost yesterday. In the doubles A&M’s teami! Ragland and Tillerson won while the team of Hickey and Crumley was defeated. For all your insurance needs See U. M. Alexander, Jr. ’40 221 S.
