Highlights Spring Workouts
THE BATTALION

By GARY SHERER
At the start of spring football
training, Coach Gene Stallings
and his staff were faced with the
task of finding someone to fill
the holes on the offensive line.
The holes were caused because
Dan Schneider, Robert Cortez
and Mark Weaver will be picking
up their diplomas in May.
THE THREESOME’S departure
has left the two guard slots and
one tackle position up for grabs.
So far, several candidates have
been battling for the spots. Sev
eral have worn the maroon first-
team jerseys and then lose them
to somebody else and go back to
the white squad. First year men
Jim Parker, Tommy Deaton and
Jim Segrist, along with juniors
Ronald Reagen, Gary Gruben and
Mark Thomas, have been used at
the guard slots. Juniors Mike
Caswell, Joe Shaw and sopho
more-to-be Mike Fields have been
contesting the tackle spot.
The rest of the offensive posi
tions are being manned by season
ed veterans. Wendell Housley and
Javier Vela are the one-two men
at fullback with Larry Stegent
and sophomore - to - be Johnny
Weaver at the tailback slot. Edd
Hargett and Charlie Riggs are
the top two at quarterback and
Barney Harris is at wingback.
JIMMY ADAMS and Tommy
Buskman are lining up at end
with Carl Gough at the strong

tackle spot. Finally Jack Kovar
and Rusty Stallings are the top
centers. Of these candidates, five
are seniors and six are juniors.
Things are a little more solid
on the defensive side of things
as, so far, only one first-year
man has been given a maroon
jersey. That candidate is Ohioan
Mike DiNero. His good showing
is a welcome sight, as the de
fense will lose only one starter,
Grady Allen. Allen’s shoes will
be hard to fill but DiNero may
be able to do it.
THE REST of the defense is
manned by returnees. The line
has juniors Jimmy Piper at end
and Lynn Odom at middle guard
teaming with seniors Rolf Krue
ger and Harvey Ashenback at
tackle. Backing up the line are
seniors Bill Hobbs and Ivan Jones
with junior Buster Adami.
In the secondary, one senior,
Curley Hallman, lines up with
three juniors, Arthur Cooley, Ross
Brupbacher and Jack Whitmore.
Wednesday night was the fifth
workout of the alloted 20 and a
controlled scrimmage on Kyle
Field highlighted the workout.
The maroon offense and defense
played to a standstill, with the
defense intercepting a pass and
falling on a fumble. Whitmore
grabbed an errant pass and
Krueger recovered the loose ball.
THE SECOND offensive unit,
the whites, came through well as
they scored on the maroon de
fense. The drive was featured
by some fine line play from
Reagen, Caswell, Shaw, Segrist
and first year man Benny De-
Witt at center.

The plane was shared by three
other Texas schools, Texas Uni
versity, Baylor and Abilene
Christian, making the trip.
The Relays provide some of the
toughest competition in the na
tion with all the individuals hav
ing to qualify for the meet with
earlier performances.
“This will be one of our tough
est tests of the season,” Coach
Thomas said.
“Most of the Southwest Con
ference schools will be there as
well as the best in the Big 8 and
Big 10 conferences.”
The Aggies will enter a team
in the 440, 880 and mile relays.
The 440 yard team will be made
up of Gary Abernathy, Curtis
Mills, Scott Hendricks and Tom
Cilio. The best time for A&M
in the event this year was 41.1.
Mike Boyd, Mills, Hendricks
and Cilib will comprise the Ag
gie’s 880 yard team.
In the mile event, Boyd, Mills,
Willie Rodriguez and Steve Ban
croft will represent A&M.
Mills has drawn special praise
from Coach Thomas for his re
cent performances which includes
first places in the last two meets.
“He is running real good and
is really coming along fas t,”
Coach Thomas said, “and the best
part is that he is only a fresh
man.”
Freshman Kelvin Korver, who
had the SWC best effort in the
discus for the year last week at
169-14, will be competing in his
speciality along with R o n n y
Lightfoot.
Rockie Woods and Kim Sutton,
two more freshmen, will be enter
ed in the high jump while Martin
Rollins will try his hand at the
pole vault.
Representing A&M in the
men’s shot put will be George
Resley and Lightfoot.
Randy Matson, the Aggies and
the world’s best known shot put
ter, will be busy on the west
coast Saturday as he travels to
California for the Mt. Sike In
vitational.
The Invitational will feature
many of the world’s best weight-
men including Neil Steinhauer of
Oregon. Steinhauer has been
Matson’s chief competition in the
shot for the past three years.
