World Engineers
Attend Meet Here
Almost 300 engineers regis
tered Monday for the three-day
annual Conference for Protective
Relay Engineers at Texas A&M.
Participants from throughout
the U. S. and several foreign
countries will hear presentations
and discuss protective relay
equipment operation on electrical
transmission lines and equipment.
The conference is sponsored by
A&M’s Electrical Engineering De
partment, headed by Dr. W. B.
Jones. Prof. L. M. Haupt is
chairman.
Speakers from electrical firms
and transmission corporations,
chemical and construction com
panies will make conference pres
entations. Sessions and confer
ence headquarters are in the
Memorial Student Center.
Sulak Named Top
Chemistry Student
Raymond M. Sulak of Waco, a
sophomore chemical engineering
major at Texas A&M, has been
honored as the top sophomore
chemistry student at the univer
sity.
Sulak was presented the Soph
omore Award of the A&M chap
ter of Phi Lambda Upsilon, na
tional honor chemical society.
The award, presented by Jack
L. Stout of Liberal, Kan., chap
ter president, consisted of the
“Handbook of Chemistry and
Physics” inscribed with Sulak’s
name. The sophomore was also
guest of the Annual chapter ban
quet. Stout is a chemistry grad
uate student.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie J.
Sulak, Route 5, Waco, the 1966
Reicher High graduate was se
lected on the basis of scholastic
achievemertt in chemistry during
his freshtnan year and the fall
semester.
He had a 2.88 grade point ratio
out of a possible 3.0.

grams Monday night.
RON TEFTELLER, operations

newly arrived last fall from the
U. S. Naval Academy at An
napolis, said:
“I think that in the past, we’ve
had an ineffective Student Senate
They lacked definite goals and
had no effective means of com
municating their programs to the
student body.”
BILL CARTER, current vice-
president of the student senate,
and sergeant major of the first
brigade, expressed it a little dif
ferently:
“I feel that the Student Senate
has been effective in its public
relations work, but next year I
think it should get directly in
volved in student issues. It
shouldn’t just be a voice for the
students, but should stand di
rectly behind them.”
TERRY W. HARVICK, supply

a third candidate for the presi
dency, said:
“The Student Senate has been
very active in the past, but has
lacked the proper means and
leadership for achieving its goals.
Many promises have been made
to the students, but few results
have been witnessed.”

Although Tefteller, Carter and
Harvick are Cadet Corps mem
bers, they have made their ef
forts plain to the civilians by
campaigning in each of the civil
ian dormitories.
Carter spoke to a group of stu
dents at the Y.M.C.A. Monday
night, giving his platforms and
answering questions.
ANOTHER POINT of consen
sus among the candidates was the
issue of clothing regulations. All
three candidates said any regu
lations concerning the regula
tions should originate from the
Civilian Student Council.
The candidates said that com
munication was an important is
sue. They all suggested alterna
tives to the present system of
communication between the Sen
ate and the students, which is
mostly through radio and news
paper and the posting of notices
on campus.
Among their suggestions was
the publication of a newsletter,
apart from newspaper publicity,
the publishing of each Senate
meeting’s minutes in The Bat
talion and closer contacts be
tween actual members of the
Senate and the students in their
respective dormitories.
