Tourney Of Champions To Feature Goalby, Casper
LAS VEGAS, Nev. CP)—Twen
ty-five title winning golfers, led
by Masters champion Bob Goalby,
Billy Casper and a band of eager
young professionals, tee off
Thursday in the first round of
the $150,000 Tournament of
Champions.
This is the 16th annual spring
time gambol of the golfers in
the land of gamblers, unique in
that to enter it a man has to win
a PGA-approved tournament.
The site is the 6,625-yard, par-
71 Stardust Country Club. The
winner of the 72-hole affair will
earn $30,000.
Back to defend the title he
captured last year is Frank Beard,
who holed an 8-foot pressure putt
for a birdie on the final hole
to beat out Arnold Palmer by one
stroke. Palmer at the time was
sitting in the clubhouse, a record
64 just completed.
Palmer and Jack Nicklaus qual
ified for the 1968 T of C but will
not play. Palmer is troubled by
a hip ailment and Nicklaus said
he preferred not to play in three
major tournaments in successive
weeks. He ••pktyed the Masters
and is committed to compete in
the Byron Nelson Open in Dallas,
Tex., next week.
Nine of the current field are
playing the tournament the first
time. Included are young Tom
Weiskopf, who is regarded as
perhaps the best threat among
the newcomers, and Tony Jacklin,
at 23 the youngest man aboard
and the first Englishman to make
the tournament.
The others here for the first
time are Dave Stockton, veteran
Charlie Sifford, Kermit Zarley,
Lou Graham, Marty Fleckman,
Randy Glover and Laure Ham
mer.
Rounding out the select list
are George Knudson, Chi Chi
Rodriguez, Dan Sikes, Gardner
Dickinson, Julius Boros, Don
January, Dave Hill, Bert Yancey,
Bob Charles, Johnny Pott, Miller
Barber, George Archer and Dud
ley Wysong.
Not entered in Las Vegas is
Roberto De Vicenzo who gained
popular support after losing the
Masters to Goalby by signing a
wrong score. The error resulted
in the South American missing a
playoff by one stroke. The Argen
tine Golf Association said Wed
nesday it “fully agrees” with the
action of United States officials
who deprived Argentina’s De
Vicenzo of first place in the
Masters last Sunday because of
the mathematical error.
“We would have acted exactly
in the same way if it had happen
ed here,” association President
Ignacio A. Ramos said in a state
ment.
De Vicenzo’s partner in the
Masters who recorded the wrong
score, a par on number 17 while
the Argentinian actually had a
birdie 3, was Tommy Aaron.
