lyyyK' . ■. New Law Passed Post Office Curbs Smut Mail Mail patrons offended by offen- fal give advertisements can now take steps to curb such mail, Post- Wi master Ernest Greg-g- said Tues day in announcing plans for ad- " ministering a new law which gives each family the right to decide that an ad is “erotically arousing or sexually provocative.” When an advertisement sent through the mails is offensive on these grounds, a postal patron can now ask the post office to direct the mailer to send no more mail to him and to immediately remove the patron’s name from all mailing lists he owns, controls or rents. To assist patrons, the Post Of fice Department has published a brief pamphlet — How You Can Curb Pandering Advertisements — which is now available at the College Station Post Office. In addition to explaining how the law works, the pocket-size leaflet contains a form letter one can use when sending his complaint to the post office. The pamphlet explains that when a patron receives an adver tisement which is, in his opinion, pandering, he must send the ad, its envelops and the form letter, or one which includes its lan guage, to his post office with the words, “Request for prohibi tory order” on the face of the envelope. Postmaster Gregg said “This new law should give some pro tection to American families of fended by advertisements they belief to be morally harmful, par ticularly to their children. “Last year the Post Office De partment received some 140,000 complaints from those offended by pandering advertisements. While in most cases the ads were not legally obscene and were therefore mailable, they are often offensive and are not the type of material one would want his chil dren to read.” He added that “because the law gives a mail patron the sole right to decide what is offensive, and does not deny others the right to receive the same mail, the Con gress felt it does not violate Con stitutional guarantees of freedom of speech.” While the patron’s complaint will only be directed to the send er, Postmaster Gregg believes that one or two complaints will provide substantial protection because “the great bulk of this advertisement comes from fewer than 20 so-called ‘smut dealers’ who are frequently swapping mailing lists.” If a mailer does not strike a complaintant’s name from this mailing list, and the patron re ceives a second mailing 30 days after the firm has received the prohibitory order, he may bring the matter to the attention of the Postmaster issuing the initial order by writing him and enclos ing the second pandering aid with its envelope. (AP Wirephoto) A Man Of Many Interests Was A Former Pro Boxer By TOM CURL Battalion Special Writer Russell K. Wieder, assistant professor of physical education, is a man of many interests, rang ing from fencing to painting. Wieder came to A&M from Western Reserve College in 1956. He specializes in teaching fencing and wrestling and was coach of the Aggies for 10 years in these sports. The stocky man has been a pro fessional boxer, fencer and diver. In addition, he has competed as an amateur in wrestling and swimming. Although Wieder has competed in many sports, his favorite is fencing. He studied under the fencing masters Generoso Pavese and Leonardo Terrone. At the age of 19, Wieder defeated Terrone, who at that time was European fenc ing champion. Wieder coached the Aggie fenc ing team from 1956-66. “We (the fencing team) never lost a dual meet in those 10 years,” he said. “We were 12th in the nation in 1958,” he continued. This is the best showing that any south ern team has ever made. In 1965, Wieder received a Master’s Certificate from the Na- 23 Students Initiated In Honor Society Twenty-three A&M meteorol ogy students were initiated into Chi Epsilon Pi, an honor society for meteorology students on Tuesday. The group consists of an Army major, a Weather Bureau em ployee, USAF officers and Aggie undergraduate and graduate stu dents in meteorology. All have exhibited both a high level of academic proficiency and great interest in the atmospheric sci ences. The purposes of the society are to serve as a means of award ing distinction to students having scholastic ability and who show promise of achievement in mete orology and related atmospheric sciences. The initial chapter of Chi Epsi lon Pi was organized at UCLA in 1950 and the Texas A&M chap ter was formed in 1963. Other chapters are now in existence at Oklahoma University, Florida State University and the Uni- S A PARDNER You’ll Always Win The Showdown When You Get Your Duds Done At CAMPUS CLEANERS tional Professional Fencing Coaches Association. Wrestling is another strong in terest of the multi - talented teacher. He coached the A&M wrestling team for 10 years at the same time he coached the fencing team. Art Classes This Summer Special art classes will be of fered by Texas A&M’s School of Architecture during the first summer session. The graphic arts classes con ducted by Joseph Donaldson, architecture artist-lecturer, will be offered June 4-July 12, an nounced Prof. Edward J. Ro- mieniec, Architecture School chairman. “Important emphasis will be given various aspects of drawing and sketching in a wide range of media and objectives,” Romieniec said. “Emphasis will also be given the use of water color, acrylic vinyl pigments and related media.” Though designed primarily for architecture majors, the program is open to the public and requires no previous art training for qual ified participants who have com pleted high school. Academic credit may also be achieved by non-architecture participants. Professors Donaldson and T. R. Holleman, will provide additional information. Tickets On Sale For Staff Dinner The wrestling team lost only one dual meet in that decade. When asked about his greatest thrill as a coach, Wieder answered that it was the Southwest Con ference Wrestling Championships in 1959. “We won it by more points than all the other schools com bined,” the soft-spoken man said. “We could have gone home at noon and still won the meet,” he said with pride. This semester Wieder is teach ing fencing 16 hours and wres tling six hours per week. Sports are not Wieder’s only interests. He also is a profes sional artist. “I’ve painted and sold several portraits,” he remarked. A painting in his office at G. Rollie White Coliseum shows a death mask reflected in three mirrors. The educator graduated from Kenyon College in 1942 with majors in physical education, his tory and foreign languages. He has done graduate work at West Missouri University. Wieder and his family live at 1106 Foster Ave. in College Sta tion. His daughter is nine years old. An older daughter recently received a Ph.D. in German. When asked about his age, the man smiled and said, “That is pretty much of a secret as far as I’m concerned.” Future plans are quite definite. “I will continue to teach fenc ing as long as I can stand up,” he said.
