APRIL 9, 1968 - 8:00 P. M.
Ocean harvesting of 400 mil
lion tons annually of usable ani
mal protein is a distinct possi
bility, predicts a Texas A&M of
ficial who heads a cooperative
Gulf of Mexico research organi
zation.
Dr. John C. Calhoun Jr., Texas
A&M’s vice president for pro
grams and president of the Gulf
Universities Research Corpora
tion, notes increased quantities of
food from the sea are possible in
three different forms.
“The first is simply as fish
food,” he explains. “Another
means is as food in non-fish
forms, but using material pro
cessed from fish for injection into
the food product manufacturing
cycle, as any other non-fish input
might be used.”
A third path, Calhoun points
out, is use of material from the
sea in agricultural production,
such as feeding fish meal to
chickens.
LARGE-SCALE production of
food from the sea, however, will
be at least as complex as produc
tion by agricultural methods, he
warns.
Considering that the total wa
ter area of the earth is much
greater than the land area, it
might be logical to expect the
ultimate food potential of the
marine environment will be much
greater, Calhoun observes.
“Although this may be true,”
he admits, “for centuries we have
been applying science and tech
nology to develop the food pro
duction route through the land
environment and, as a result, we
have today a very sophisticated
agricultural system.”
“It would be unrealistic,” the
A&M official continues, “to ex
pect that overnight we could
make up for the absence of simi
lar centuries of scientific research
and technological development in
Old Bomb,
New Honda.
Same Price.
It's true this sleek new Honda Scrambler 125 would cost
you the same money as the old used bomb, but the low
price isn't the whole Honda story. Far from it.
When you ride any of Honda's 23 models, you can forget
high insurance, upkeep, and maintenance costs. Forget
parking problems too.
And look at the Scrambler 125 styling: new candy
colors, chrome fenders, trim new forks, upswept pipes.
And performance: the 125’s dependable 4-stroke parallel
twin OHC engine delivers an impressive 13 hp at 10,000
rpm,- up to 153 mpg.
The hot new Scrambler 125. Can you think of a better
reason to ban the bomb? "y

the marine environment route and
bring it up to the point where it
would be fully competitive with
our highly developed agricultural
production.”
Dr. Calhoun, chairman of Na
tional Academy of Sciences’ Com
mittee on Oceanography, notes
that man thinks of only a small
part of this “food web” as poten
tial food from the sea. The fact
is, he explains, the entire spec
trum of bio-material belongs to
the potential resource that might
be developed.
REVIEWING the three differ
ent paths to increased production
of food from the sea, he predicts
great potential for the processed-
fish technique.
“For example, one might make
fish hot dogs or introduce fish
protein concentrate into cereal
forms,” Calhoun speculates.
In fishing operations, he re
lates, any advances to cut down
the relative transportation time
and its total impact on the system
would be an improvement.
Suggested improvements in
clude use of acoustics or biologi
cal sounds for attracting and
herding fish, fish fences, elec
tronic capturing devices and vac
uum systems.
“We might alter the marine en
vironment by running heated
water into an estuary,” he sug
gests, as a means of improving
the yield by cultivation. “We
might enhance the resource ac
cumulation by running more nu
trients into an estuary.”
“OR WE MIGHT alter the
total environment within a local
region by building an offshore
platform around which we intro
duce fertilizer and provide sound
generating equipment or other
attractive devices,” he adds.
Calhoun concludes development
of these techniques depend upon
our knowledge of the marine en
vironment and of the resource.
Another stage to be considered
is creation of new resources, like
artificial ponds for hatchery-type
cultivation.
“Food from the sea is not a
single individual system,” Cal
houn emphasizes.
He stresses it is made up of
many commodity systems with
individual characteristics that
must be taken into account in
any detailed analysis.
