Cassidy, a chemist and self- labeled scientific ambassador to the layman, said here Tuesday night. “Cybernetics is the science of control and communication which applies to the relations of men among themselves, men and ma chines and men and their environ ment. It points out the similari ties in their inner workings of a riot, a forest fire, an atomic bomb or any process which escalates,” declared the Yale University pro fessor. Dr. Cassidy presented an ad dress, “Cybernetics for the Lay man'’ in the Chemistry Lecture Hall at Texas A&M as the climax of a two-day visit to the campus. IN AN earlier interview, Dr. Cassidy, who is interested in the teaching of science to non-scien tists, explained the concept of cybernetics was first advanced by A&M To Debate Harvard Team A Texas A&M-Harvard debate match will be held in April, ac cording to Aggie debate director Robert Archer. He said the Harvard round has been set tentatively for April 1. The Aggies debate next at the All-Texas Tournament in Austin, March 22-23. Archer said two A&M teams will he in the compe tition. Ron Hinds of Midland and Bob Peek of Jacksboro debated at Natchitoches, La. last weekend. They defeated the University of Southern Mississippi, Northwest ern Louisiana and Louisiana Tech in winning three of five rounds. Losses were to McNeese. Casey Official In Science Academy Dr. Albert J. Casey of the Texas A&M University faculty has been appointed an official of the Texas Academy of Science. He will serve as vice president of the social sciences section. Casey is also editor of the acade my’s state newsletter. Most important, it shows the difference between processes: What makes the difference between a bomb and a power plant? The power plant has the same reactions and uses the same amount of energy over years instead of microsec onds,” he explained. “It’s due to the organization of the machine. That’s what is meant by the art of getting your own way,” Cassidy continued. Appearing as a Danforth Visit ing Lecturer, Dr. Cassidy visited A&M’s Chemistry Department fa cilities and faculty and talked with graduate students. HE GAVE a talk, “The Struc ture of Knowledge and Experi ence” Tuesday morning. In discussing the relationship of men and computers, Cassidy stressed that a computer “is a tool, just a tool.” “Some industrial firms will make decisions on the basis of computer - produced information, not realizing that the computer is just a tool for management. And if management doesn’t make the decision, in effect, the program mer makes the decision,” he said. “One thing a computer can’t do—it can’t make creative deci sions of the kind that require a person, faced with a problem, to draw in from his experience, things apparently quite uncon nected or even irrational so that he comes up with a solution which may be really new or unforeseen or even illogical and yet correct,” Cassidy pointed out. The scientist is best known as the first to intentionally synthe size an oxidation-reduction poly mer. He is the author of more than 100 books and articles. h Ap cepk "Suit Aug.
