Saturday afternoon, the Aggies dropped their second straight Southwest Conference game, 10- 3, to the Rice Owls at Houston. THE MUSTANGS are 2-0yn the SWC and 4-2 for the season. The loss to Rice makes the Ag gies 1-2 in the conference and 3-3 overall. Two pitchers head the list of returnees for SMU. Bob Flint and Chuck Fifield, both seniors, form a seasoned nucleus for Coach Bob Finley’s pitching crew. Pitching was the commodity Carolyn Valenta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Valen ta of Bryan is a graduate of Ste phen F. Austin High School. She was award ed a scholarship to McKenzie - Bladwin Bus iness College by the Women’s Civic League and took the Sec retarial Course She was an ear nest student and is now employed by the Extension Service, A&M University, College Station, Texas. Janice Lys is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lys of Bry an. She received a scholarship to McKenzie - Blad win College from the Bryan - Col lege Station Pro fessional Wom an’s Club upon graduation from Stephen F. Aus tin High iSchool. After receiving her diploma for successfully completing the stenograph- ic Course, she accepted employ ment at A&M University, Col lege Station, Texas. that stymied the Aggies in the Rice game. After chasing Owl starter Tom Brown, the Aggies were stopped by reliefer Tommy Speck. Speck, a freshman Trom Hous ton, came in for the Owls in the fourth inning and picked up the win. The Aggies threatened sev eral times, but a combination of double plays, base-running and a picked-off baserunner sealed the Aggies’ fate. ROCKY THOMPSON started for the Aggies and didn’t last long. While the stocky right hander was in the game, he did sock a home run (the first this year for the Aggies) which led to Reed’s dismissal by Owl Coach Doug Osburn. After Thompson’s remedial, five pitchers went to the mound for Coach Tom Chandler but none was effective. The Aggies garnered seven hits but the Owls pulled off several double plays to cut down any chance of Aggie rallies. IT\WAS A CLOSE game until the Owls’ half of the eighth in ning. At that time, Rice sent 11 men to bat and when the dust had cleared, seven runs had been added to the Owl total. Following today’s game, the Aggies will next be in action at Fort Worth on Saturday after noon. The Horned Frogs are cur rently tied with SMU for the top spot in the SWC race. Chilly Bears Start Drills WACO (A*) — Neither rain nor sleet nor cold north wind stopped Baylor football spring training Monday, but dark of night sure did after two frigid hours of run ning on a graveled parking lot. The match lasted eight hours with the last doubles going 2% hours. Coach Omar Smith’s dou bles team of Marcus Beleck and Jerry Oliver won the last match 6-2, 15-17, 6-3 to sack away the victory. The team of Jon Ragland and Joe Tillerson posted a 7-5, 6-4 doubles win while Ragland won his single match 5-7, 8-6 and 6-2. A&M stays at home today by hosting Southeastern Oklahoma. TRACK Lonny Noel and George Resley provided the Aggie track team with its only first place finishes in the Border Olympics over the weekend as the team placed third in the seven team meet. Coach Charley Thomas’ track- sters had a team total of 41 points behind first place Texas University and second place Rice. Resley took the shot with a toss of 55-11 followed by team mate Ronny Lightfoot at 55-10 while Noel won the broad jump with a leap of 22-1. The Aggie 440 relay team of Tom Cilio, Curtis Mills, Scott Hendricks and Jack Abbott fin ished second wtih a time of 41.2.
