Aggie Track, Golf Teams
In Laredo For Weekend
By JOHN PLATZER
One of the state’s most presti
gious track meets, the Border
Olympics, is on schedule for Coach
Charlie Thomas’ Aiggies Saturday
in Laredo.
The meet will begin early in
the morning with the field events
and continue with the running
portion throughout the day.
AMONG THE OTHER major
colleges entered in the university
division are such annual powers
as Rice, University of Houston,
Texas Christian University, Texas
Tech, Lamar Tech and Texas Uni
versity.
A total of 64 schools and 894
athletes are entered in the three
divisions of the meet.
Rice is the meet’s defending
university division champion and
should prove a tough obstacle
again this season according to
Coach Thomas.
“I THINK Rice would have to
be the general favorite,” Thomas
said, “but Houston thinks they
have a good team this season
and I would certainly hope we
would have a good chance.”
In a meet as large as this week
end’s the most important deter
mining factor in the champion is
usually its depth, Thomas said.
One of Thomas’ main causes
of optimism this season has been
the performance of senior Martin
Rollins.
The pole vaulter from Alabama
took a first in the Aggies til-
meet last weekend in College
Station with a vault of 16-1%,
a new school record for A&M.
IF ROLLINS can come up with
another 16 or better effort in
Laredo, it would set a new meet
record and Thomas believes he
is quite capable of it.
Thomas, in fact, expects Rol
lins to clear the 17 foot barrier

Curtis Mills, a 6-3 freshman,
is another bright ray of hope in
the Aggie track fortunes. He fin
ished second t o Rice’s Conley
Brown in the 440 at the College
Station with a time of 48.0 while
defeating Texas’ talented Dave
Morton.
THE AGGIE freshman led the
Rice junior until the final 20
yards when Brown turned on the
steam to edge out the win. Mills
is also a key boy in the Aggie’s
440 and mile relay teams.
Ronnie Lightfoot and 1 George
Resley give A&M two of the fin
est weightmen in track again this
season and should place well in
the shotput. They placed one-two
in the event last weekend with
tosses of 56-014 and 53-2 respec
tively.
Jack Abbott and Steve O’Neal
are expected to give the Aggies
points in the hurdles.
GOLF
Coach Henry Ransom’s golf
team also made the trip to Laredo
where they will compete in the
Border Olympics’ three day tourn
ament which began today.
Among the team’s in the tourn
ament was the University of
Houston’s defending national
champions.
The Aggies, defending South
west Conference champions, won
the Fort Worth Invitational last
week.
Bill Wade paced the Fort Worth
win firing a 139 for medalist hon
ors. Others making the Laredo
trip with the Aggies are Reggie
Majors, Richard Ellis, Skip Bresk,
Terry Archer and Duke Butler.
TENNIS
The Aggie tennis team contin
ues on the road this weekend as
they take on Corpus Christi Uni
versity on their home grounds to
day and then travel to San An
tonio to play Trinity Saturday.
Monday the team returns home
to play North Texas State.
SWIMMING
Coach Omar Smith’s A g g i e
swimming team is at home Satur
day against Texas University in
a 4 p.m. match.
The Aggies finished in fourth
in last season’s conference swim
ming race while Texas finished
second t o champion Southern
Methodist University.

Nine Meets Rice
Car Buffs do it!
By GARY SHERER
The Texas Aggie baseball team
is on the road again tomorrow
afternoon at Houston in a 2:30
contest with the Rice Owl nine.
Righthander Rocky Thompson
will get the starting call from
Coach Tom Chandler. Thompson,
the 6-footer from Houston who
transferred to A&M last year
from Kilgore JC, is 1-0 on the
year.
HIS VICTORY came over Texas
last Saturday, 1-0 at Bryan’s
Travis Park Field. Thompson
came within two outs of getting
credit for the shutout, as Bob
Sanders had to come in to save
the win.
Rice under the tutelage of
Coach Doug Osbum has a slim
squad this season. The Owl teams
usually field small sports teams
because of a small student body
but this years’ diamond squad is
especially small. Nineteen men are
on the Owl roster.
Graduation hit Rice the hardest
in the most important spot, the
pitching department. Mickey Hoi-

THIS SEASON, Osburn’s bright
