THE BATTALION Page 4 College Station, Texas Tuesday, March 5, 1968 Selma Negroes Hoping For White Help In Election ill' > .: < ,5- - v- LEAP OF JOY Caryl Ann Hill flipped when she received her third degree brown belt, an outstanding level of judo attainment for a woman. Unfortunately, Air Force Capt. Gibbs Dibrell, Texas A&M judo club instructor, was closest when Mrs. Hill learned of her new rank. Judo Instructor Flips Over Pupil When dinner dishes are to be done in the James S. Hill home, there’s no argument. James’ wife Caryl holds judo’s third degree brown belt, one rank above her husband. The coveted belt signifying judo capability was presented Mrs, Hill by Dr. William P. Fife, club sponsor who wears the first degree black belt, and Air Force Capt. Gibbs Dibrell, sensei (in structor in judo terminology). “The brown belt is the first significant step for women in progression to black belt rank,” Dibrell noted. Mrs. Hill, whose husband is an Air Force Institute of Technology student in computer science at A&M, began judo less than two years ago at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. She advanced from beginner to green belt status in eight months. First Lieutenant Hill is also a member of A&M’s Judo Club and both are active in club and civic affairs. He is administrator of the organization’s junior judo classes and Mrs. Hill instructs fourth through sixth grade judo students. The mother of three, she is also consultant to four junior Girl Scout troops and was instructor in a women’s self-defense course the club staged. The Hills are from Amarillo. James’ parents are Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Hill, 406 Sunset, Amarillo. Read Classifieds Daily SELMA, Ala. OP) — Selma Negroes, their outnumbered ranks divided on one political race but united on the others, hope for the support of some white voters Tuesday to get one or more Negroes elected to city office. The Democratic primary, to nominate the party’s candidates for mayor and the city council, is the first municipal election here since the historic struggle three years ago which brought passage of the federal voting rights law. One of the Negro candidates, HemisFair To Begin State Talent Hunt Young people with performing talents will have an opportunity to try out for appearances in HemisFair’s “Project Y” Sunday, March 10, at the University of Houston. The Houston auditions, open to all young people from 13 up, are part of a statewide search for talent to appear at Project Y, a fair area designed to present the concerns and creative activities of young people. The auditions will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Houston Room in the University Center, with officials searching for talent to appear during the April 6 - Oct. 6 San Antonio World’s Fair. Emphasis will be on musical groups, both vocal and instru mental, folk singers and dancers. “Quality will have to be high because these young people are competing, in effect, with groups scheduled to come from other parts of the United States and Latin America,” Jim Wharton, producer for the Project Y Caba ret, said. The only payment those selected will receive is free admission to HemisFair. Future auditions include Dal las, March 16, and Laredo, March 23. Project Y includes a broad range of activities—painting and sculpture under the trees, work shops and discussions with visit ing personalities, theatrical per formances, sports and games, musical jam sessions. There will be a continuous program of spe cial events, including festivals, improvisational theater, parades and contests. At a later date. Project Y will begin to receive examples of work by non-professional film-makers for a “Film-Makers’ Festival” to be held late in June. For further information contact Lynn Cal vert, P.O. Reese said his group, hoping to solicit support from white voters, decided against trying to get a Negro mayor elected and concen trated instead on the city council. The six other Negroes on Tuesday’s ballot are running for six of the 10 places on the coun cil, and all have one or more white opponents. The voters league has given the Negro can didates its all-out support. Anderson does have some Negro backing nevertheless, including an endorsement from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who led the voters’ protest marches in 1965.
