The rest of the SWC teams will
complete their seasons tomorrow
afternoon and night. Tonight’s
game was moved up from Satur
day to accomodate the regional
basketball tournament tomorrow
night, that will be played here.
SMU WAS the conference
champion last season but lost
four starters to graduation. This
left the responsibility up to re
turning starter all-SWC Lynn
Phillips and the Mustangs’ top
sub last year, Bill Voight.
The Mustangs there, were pick
ed to finish low in the standings
because of the loss of so many
experienced personnel. Until re
cently, the Mustangs went along
with the prediction and stayed
down in the standings. Then, they
got hot, and ran off four straight
conference wins.
This hot streak by the Mus
tangs started about the same
time the Aggies were beginning
their string of five-in-a-row. The
Mustangs were stopped by Texas
last Saturday 83-72 at Dallas
while Texas Christian was stop
ping the Aggie streak at Fort
Worth.
SMU brings 5-8 conference and
6-17 overall records into tonight’s

game. The Aggies are 7-6 and
13-10.
THE MUSTANGS, who topped
the Aggies 78-77 earlier this
year at Dallas, depend on Phillips
and Voight for most of their
scoring. However, the four-game
win streak came about because
more players started scoring, and
the Mustangs now have a more
balanced attack.
Phillips, 6-7 forward from
Houston, currently the number
three scorer in the SWC, with
Voight hot on his heels in fourth.
Voight, a 6-3 junior from Dallas,
has come into his own this sea
son and also is one of the team’s
rebound leaders.
The Mustangs have been get
ting more scoring lately from
two players who both hail from
Hurst. Donnie Berg, 6-5 forward
guard,
to the
and Gary Sibley a 6-2
both juniors, have added
Mustangs resurgence.
Coach Bob Prewitt took over
the Mustang head job this sea
son, succeeding E. O. (Doc)
Hayes who had been a legend at
SMU. Prewitt had been Hayes’
assistant for many seasons.
THE AGGIES, who were elim
inated from the SWC title scram
ble by Texas Tech Tuesday night,
will be looking to finish this
season with a win. A victory will
cinch a tie for second for the
Maroon and White.
Coach Shelby Metcalf plans one
change in the starting lineup.
Harry Bostic, who led the second
half comeback in the Tech game,
will start in place of Mike Heit-
mann. The rest of the lineup will
be Sonny Benefield, Johnny Un
derwood, Billy Bob Barnett and
Ronnie Peret.
Underwood along with Captain
Terry Trippet will be playing
their last game for the Aggies
tonight. Underwood has been a
starter all season, while Trippet
has been used mainly as a substi-
tue at several positions.
The Aggies have been the most
improved team in the conference
this season and a lot of observers
say that the Maroon and White
had the best personnel in the
SWC this season.
THE CATCH is that the SWC,
this season in particular, is usual
ly evenly-matched and often the
best team doesn't win.
The game will highlight a big
sports weekend on the A&M cam
pus, so a big crowd will be ex
pected.
