Morning speakers include David
Reyes-Guerra of New York, JETS
executive director, and Dr. Harry
Sweet, associate professor of
mechanical engineering at A&M.
Dr. C. H. Samson, head of the
university’s Civil Engineering De
partment, will moderate the
afternoon session. Among the
speakers are Dr. D. D. Drew,
Dr. W. A. Dunlap, Dr. W. B.
Ledbetter and Prof. E. S. Hold-
redge, all of A&M’s engineering
faculty, and E. I. Bailey, a gradu
ate fellow.
McGuire will preside at the
opening general session, with
A&M President Earl Rudder ex
tending greetings and Engineer
ing Dean Fred Benson delivering
the welcoming address.
GRADUATE Dean Wayne C.
Hall will be in charge of the
closing session, highlighted by
announcement of four JETS
scholarships and presentation of
awards for competitive tests and
technical papers.
The final session also will
include an “Industry and Edu
cation” address by Russell D.
Brooks of Dallas, senior engineer
for the Industrial Generating Co.
and chairman of the Texas Ad
visory Committee for JETS.
The conference is sponsored by
the Texas Advisory Committee
in cooperation with A&M’s Col
lege of Engineering. The commit
tee is composed of more than 20
businessmen, engineers and edu
cators from throughout the state.
While noting that most of the
participants will be members of
some 100 JETS chapters in the
state, Dean McGuire emphasized
that all high school students and
teachers are invited to attend
the conference.
JETS was organized to inform
high school students and their
teachers and parents about the
engineering profession.
WASHINGTON (^P) — The
Council of Graduate Schools in
the United States appealed to
Congress Tuesday to abolish all
college draft deferments and turn
to a random lottery of 19-year-
olds to serve in the armed forces.
The council, which represents
major universities across the
country, also strongly opposed
designation of certain subjects
to which students would be eligi
ble for deferment.
Under the new rules only those
graduate students in the medical
or related fields may be deferred
in the future. Students in college
or apprentice school may be de
ferred until they complete their
training.
The council’s position paper
said the rule barring future draft
deferments for graduate students
imposes serious planning burdens
on universities which rely heavily
on graduate teaching assistants
from such service,” the statement
said.
“We believe that draft-eligible
men should be inducted on the
basis of random selection upon
reaching the age of 19.”
20 Teen-age Girls
Attack Policemen
to teach some freshman courses.
The council stressed its accep
tance of the principle that- mili
tary service is an obligation of
every able-bodied citizen.
“We believe that this obliga
tion should be borne equally by
all citizens and that neither
graduate nor undergraduate
should be deferred or exempted
Deadline Nearing

CORONA, Calif. OP> — Beware
the fury of thwarted females,
even if they’re only kids in mini
skirts.
Twenty teen-aged girls stormed
the police station in this small
Riverside County town early
Monday, breaking down the front
door, smashing a plate glass win
dow and wrestling six officers
to the ground.
Officer John Cunningham said
the six tried to push the girls
out of the building and “they
started swinging, scratching and
tackling us. It was a real free-
for-all, with three and four girls
jumping each officer.”
Eventually the officers hand
cuffed four girls and the rest
fled. Names of those held were
not released because they are
under 18.
The reason for the rampage ?
The girls were protesting the
arrest of two teen-age boys ac
cused of possessing liquor.
Deadline for applying for A&M
student travel loans is Friday,
according to Davis G. Mayes,
chairman of the Memorial Stu
dent Center Travel Committee.
