NEW TESTING DEVICE
Dr, Ronald Wells, a metallurgist at Texas A&M Univre-

A Texas A&M University met-
illurgist has designed a machine
rhieh duplicates the stresses and
itrains of welding without a
ipark being struck.
Dr. Ronald Wells of the Space
iesearch Center at A&M hopes
o get an insight into what hap-
ens in cracking of metals.
This research is important be-
,use manufacturers of such
lighly-sophisticated objects as
pacecraft are using more exotic
echniques in casting and welding
lew metals.
“We hope ultimately to have
theory of cracking—a really
[uantitative theory,” Dr. Wells
laid.
After coming to A&M, Dr.
Pells and students developed a
apparatus which subjects
lamples of metals to conditions
simulating welding.
“We heat by resistance (like
the coils in a toaster) a metal
to a set program and it is re
strained and cooled at a given
rate. So, instead of having to
weld a full structure and have
it fail, we can do it on a model,”
he said.
Wells noted investigators have
found that most weld cracking
occurs at the diffusion line just
out of the weld.
The researcher is one of a num
ber of investigators who are
studying the new requirements
made on materials by the space
age.

be analyzed, Wells pointed out.
Mathematical models of space
craft structures like the Apollo
command module are being used
by the space agency in design
considerations.
Wells also will do work in the
so-called composite materials.
These mixtures including fiber
glass open up a new area of
possibilities for extremely light,
strong structures.
LORMAN, Miss. (A*) — A stu
dent riot erupted into a gun-
battle early today when white
officers cleared a burning dor
mitory with tear gas, and three
persons fell wounded by bullets
at all-Negro Alcorn A&M College.
Two persons were rushed to a
hospital at nearby Port Gibson,
one with a bullet wound and the
other slashed by flying glass.
Two of the wounded students
and five others cut by glass or
debris apparently were not in
jured seriously enough to be hos
pitalized.
THE OFFICERS reported they
were forced to fire on the crowd
of 200 when they dispersed riot
ing male students from the dor
mitory and then were fired on
with one shotgun and several
pistols.
“Students were firing guns,
throwing bricks and chairs and
they set one building on fire,”
reported Chief Deputy Dan S.
McCay of Claiborne County.
None of the 40 highway parol-
men, 11 campus guards and
sheriff’s deputies were wounded.
The fire in the dormitory was
quickly put out.
LATER today, sullen students
met in small groups under the
wary eye of highway patrolmen,
who maintained roadblocks
around the co-educational school
of some 2,300 students.
A school spokesman implied
that the highway patrol was
rougher than necessary in clear
ing the dormitory. The spokesman
said there were some doubts as
to what actually started the
shooting.
“There was some shooting out
here—but there is a question of
who was shooting what,” the
spokesman said. “I certainly can
not deny the students were shoot
ing, because I was not there and
the highway patrol might have
more information about what
went on all during the night.”
DEPUTY McCay blamed the
riot on three students—“one sus
pended for drinking and the
other two for cursing the school’s
superintendent.”
The riot at Alcorn, located deep
in rural southwest Mississippi,
was the second involving gunfire
at a Negro college in the past
two weeks.
Classes were closed at South
Carolina State College at Orange
burg on Feb. 9 after three young
Negroes were killed the night
before during racial violence.
That town was reported “return
ing to normal” today and classes
were scheduled to resume Mon
day.
AT ALCORN, the school
spokesman said the administra
tion feels handicapped about dis
cussing the problems because it
is felt the highway patrol took
control of the situation away
from the president. He said the
three unidentified students
blamed as ringleaders were put
off the campus last week after
an accident at the president’s
house.
A&M Awarded $65,000 Grant
For Health Study Development
Texas A&M has been awarded
a $65,000 U. S. Office of Educa
tion grant to help develop the
university’s capabilities in health
education.
Dr. C. W. Landiss, head of
A&M’s Health and Physical Edu
cation Department, said the funds
will be used for faculty develop
ment, library resources and teach
ing materials.
The Department of Health,
Eudaction and Welfare agency
also has awarded the university
eight health education fellowships
during a two-year period begin
ning Sept. 1.
A&M’s health education fellow
ship program, directed by Dr.
Donald J. Merki, is designed to
train high school health teachers.
Each of the 12-month fellow
ships will provide for student
stipends and other expenses for
study on the master’s level.
