Main 822-6000 Earthquake Study Begun In Colombia Texas A&M and the Universi- dad Nacional de Colombia are cooperating in a precise study of the shifting and upheaval of the earth due to earthquakes in northwestern Colombia. Dr. James E. Case, associate professor of geology and geo physics at Texas A&M and Rich ard W. Moore of Dallas, an A&M graduate student, are in Panama City initiating the research. Case, who did a similar study in Alaska after the Good Friday earthquake, is the principal United States investigator and Professors Luis Guillermo Duran and Alfonso Lopez are the Colom bian investigators. SPECIAL EFFORTS will be made to establish a number of precise, gravity recoverable “bench marks” that can be re occupied after major earthquakes to aid in determining the extent of vertical changes in land level. The gravity meters used are so sensitive they can detect up heavals of about a foot and a half. Dr. Robert R. Berg, head of the Department of Geology and Geography at Texas A&M, noted Case had found displacements up to eight feet in Alaska and “sur vey maps are not accurate enough to determine this.” BETTER knowledge of the me chanics of earthquakes and pos sible ways to predict them could result from the study, it was pointed out. The particular area the scien tists will be studying is the Choco region of Colombia where the Panamanian and Andean moun tain chains diverge. “This is wild country, unsur veyed and with only a few roads,” Berg said. Some geophysicists believe this is a result of squeezing by the conti nental mass. THE FIELD work of the scien tists has four phases: 1. Gravity and magnetic sur veys across the southern end of the Isthmus of Panama along the survey of bench marks estab lished by the Corps of Engineers in connection with the proposed Atrato-Truando Interoceanic Ca nal Route. 2. Geophysical surveys and geology of sea cliffs between Buenaventura and the Panamani an border on the Pacific Coast. 3. Geophysical surveys along the Rio Atrato and Gulf of Uraba on the Caribbean side. 4. Geophysical surveys along existing jeep roads at the north ern end of the Cordillera Occi dental. The $40,000 worth of research is supported by the National Sci ence Foundation, Texas A&M Research Foundation and the Universidad Nacional de Colom bia. Numerous Colombian and U. S. governmental agencies and petroleum companies are cooper ating. The investigators will work un til May this year and will return for four months in 1969. Sound Off Editor, The Battalion: In regard to some disrespect ful (Aggie-jokes type) remarks made by some executives (includ ing t. u. delegates) at one of the Young Democratic State Executive Committee meetings concerning the Aggies winning the Southwest Conference and the Cotton Bowl, the Texas A&M University Young Democratic Club felt an apology was in order for their disrespectful beliefs in the ‘Fightin’ Texas Aggies. So, on Feb. 4, the following resolution was reluctantly adopted. ■ : , , Resolution: WHERAS, Texas A&M Uni versity has had an outstanding football season this year, winning the Southwest Conference Cham pionship and the New Year’s Day Cotton Bowl game against the University of Alabama; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Young Democratic Clubs of Texas do congratulate the Aggies on their fine football season.
