Call Betsy Nulty — 823-8131 Thursday and Friday Tracksters’ Performance Encouraging To Thomas By JOHN PLATZER Encouraging signs were seen by Coach Charlie Thomas in the performances of the five members of his Aggie track team who participated in the Fort Worth Indoor meet this past weekend. “We felt as if all the boys did just a real good job,” Coach Thomas said. Particularly pleasing to Thom as was the performance of sopho more shotputter Ronny Lightfoot. The 6-3, 245 pound marketing major finished fifth with a throw of 56-8 but what was more im portant was that the toss bettered all Southwest Conference shot- putters in the meet. Lightfoot’s first throw in varsi ty competition was only a half inch behind his best effort ever. Jack Abbott was another high spot of the meet for the Aggies with a third place finish in the 60 yard hurdles. Abbott, a 6-2, 185 pounder from Harlingen, was beaten out by former United States Olympic star Ralph Boston. The thing that impressed Thomas the most about his mile relay team for the meet was that “they ran real close with Texas and Baylor.” The entire track squad swings into action February 23 in Waco for the Baylor meet and according to Thomas it will take a great effort for the Aggies to come away victorious. “Baylor is the conference favor ite along with Rice and they are really loaded with just great depth,” Thomas said. “They have the potential of winning a first in each event.” Following the Waco meet the Aggie tracksters return to Col lege Station to host their first meet of the year March 1. It will be a tri-school affair between A&M, Rice and Texas. Coach Henry Ransom’s golfers continue with their tryouts this weekend before preparing for their first tournament of the year. It will be the Fort Worth Recre ational Tournament of March 1-2. — BATTALION CLASSIFIED — Political Announcements Subject to action of the Dem ocratic Primary May 4, 1968. (AP Wirephoto) Consol Cagers Set Sights On Feb. 23 Playoff Date By JOHN PLATZER Hanging in a prominent posi tion on the wall of the A&M Con solidated gymnasium is a huge sign with the message “To State In ’68” printed for all to see. Coach Jack Churchill and his Tiger cagers seem to be bent on turning this prediction into a prophecy as they continue to roar toward a February 23 district playoff with Conroe. The last remaining barrier be tween the maroon and white cagers and the playoff comes Tuesday night in the form of a road game with La Grange. Churchill is looking at the game with guarded optimism. “I am sure they will play us a lot closer up there than they did down here,” Churchill said. Consolidated raced to an easy 70-36 victory over La Grange in College Station earlier in the district campaign. La Grange’s height and strength are the main causes of Churchill’s worries. They start one 6-3 boy along with a couple who tip the yardstick at 6-2. The disappointing performance of the Tigers three games ago in Houston against Furr may also be a cause. In that game Consoli dated escaped with a razor thin 48-46 win with a performance that has been labeled as one of their poorer ones of the season. The likeable young coach is fear ful that a like game Tuesday could prove disastrous. Poor performances have been few and far between for the Tigers thus far this season, how ever, and even when one occurs they have usually been better than their opponents’ best efforts. The coaching of Churchill com bined with the many talents of starters Ennis Watson, Jan Dozier, James Nichols, David Terral and Howard Terrell have taken Consolidated to a 30-2 sea son record, 10-1 in district, and a spot as one of the state’s most respected AAA powers. Churchill returned for his sec ond stint at Consolidated two years ago and the Tigers’ prog ress in that time has been great. He started out his career at Mc Kinney where he served for two seasons and moved from there to serve six years at College Sta tion. He interrupted his years with the Tigers with a season at Corpus Christi Carroll. Watson, a big 6-9 center, is Consolidated’s main offensive threat as well as its most likely all-state candidate. An unselfish player whose passes set up many of his teammates’ shots, the slen der senior has hit for 19.5 points per game in conference action while pulling down 10.8 rebounds a contest. Of the 159 shots Watson has taken in district he has made good on 97 for 61 per cent. Dozier, a 6-3 forward, is the team’s second top scorer and re bounder. He has hit on 69 of 140 attempts in district play for 49 per cent while averaging 15.4 points a game and 8.1 rebounds. Most of the team’s other scor ing is by Nichols and Terral. Nichols is averaging 12.4 while Terral is at 5.7. Nichols has hit on 56 of 95 shots for a 59 mark. Consolidated has averaged 60 points in district while holding their opposition to 43. They have hit on 268 of 530 attempts for 50.6 per cent while pulling down 346 rebounds to 241 for their opponents. He scored of the Tigers’ last 10 points the third quarter and contribiti 9 in the final eight minutes. Nichols hit on 10 of 15 topi the scoring with 25 while Doii had 20 and Watson eontritai 18.
