College Dean Urged To Quit Or Be Fired
By GARY GARRISON
BROWNSVILLE, Tex. —
W. T. Poulos, dean of Texas
Southmost College, told a news
conference Wednesday that col
lege trustees told him Monday
that he must resign immediately
or be fired.
I’oulos said he will not quit.
He said the trustees at a Mon
day night meeting told him he
faced no personal or professional
charges.
I’OULOS said the dispute oc
curred at a very inopportune time.
An intensive investigation of
marijuana smoking is taking
place in Brownsville after a col
lege student was slain. But the
trustees made no mention of that
investigation or the slaying. The
killing has not been solved.
Student leaders told newsmen
they are considering a protest
demonstration in support of
Poulos.
"I will not resign my position
as dean of Texas Southmost Col
lege,” I’oulos said.
"I HAVE served this college
and community well and consider
it unfair and unjust that some
persons have tried to damage my
personal and professional reputa
tion,” Poulos said.
Poulos said he felt the action by
the board was taken “at a very
poor time.”
An intensive investigation of
marijuana at Brownsville has
been under way since the slaying
last month of Arthur Louis Ziegel-
meyer III, 20, a Texas Southmost
College student from Fort Worth.
ZIEGELMEYER’S bullet-punc
tured body was found in a canal
near Brownsville Jan. 30. He
had been shot five times.
Poulos said he had cooperated
“fully” with Brownsville and
Cameron County officers during
the investigation.
College President C. J. Gar
land would not comment on Pou
los’ statement. He referred in
quiring newsmen to C.S. Eidman,
president of the college board.
EIDMAN was not available for
comment.
Poulos said he had heard un
substantiated reports that he was
being asked to resign because the
incoming president of the college
has already selected another dean.
Garland is to retire Aug. 31
and will be succeeded by Paul
Bogart.
Poulos’ contract was to ex
pire Aug. 31. He said he had
made no plans because “I really
don’t know what my status is.”
Poulos, a graduate of Hardin-
Simmons University, Abilene,
Tex., has served as dean of the
junior college for three years.
The school has 1,085
It is state-supported.
