Fort Worth Meet Friday
Begins Ag Track Season
By JOHN PLATZER
Coach Charlie Thomas’ Aggie
track team travels to Fort Worth
Friday for its first meet of the
year.
A&M WILL be among approxi
mately 20 universities to be repre
sented pa the invitational which
will be run in Will Rogers Coli
seum. Most of the Southwest
Conference schools will be repre
sented as well as other schools
in Texas and such out of state
schools at Kansas and Oklahoma.
“This is one of the season’s best
meets,’’ Coach Thomas said. “It
has been a sellout almost every
year.”
Tom Cilio will compete for
A&M in the 300 yard dash while
Jack Abbott, a junior, will run
the 60 yard high hurdles and
Richard Ball, David Dalton and
Robert Munson make up the
school’s mile relay team for the
meet.
SOPHOMORE Ronny Lightfoot
and Randy Matson, who holds the
world record at his specialty, will
represent the Aggies in the shot-
put. Matson has completed his
track eligibility at A&M but is
allowed to compete at the Fort
Worth meet where no team point
total is kept.
Many of the team’s better boys
will not be allowed to participate.
“CURTIS MILLS is one of our
best boys but he is just a fresh
man with no experience and it
would be too dangerous for him,”
Thomas explained.
Senior Jack White and junior
Mike Boyd have had the flu the
past week and also will be unable
to compete.
Following the Will Rogers In
door the Aggies wait until Febru
ary 23 for their next meet when
they travel to Waco for the Bay
lor Invitational. The team will
appear at home for the first time
March 1 when they host Rice
and Texas.
WHILE THE Aggie cindermen
are competing in their first meet,
Coach Henry Ransom will be
searching for his best golfers in
qualifying rounds this weekend at
the A&M golf course.
The freshmen will try out on
Thursday, Friday, Saturday and
Sunday and the varsity players
will shoot 18 rounds Friday and
27 each on Saturday and Sunday.
The qualifications will be run
like a tournament with medal
play and 16 boys will try out for
the varsity while 14 are expected
to try out for the freshmen.

Coach Jack Churchill’s A&M
Consolidated Tigers passed one of
their biggest tests of the year
Tuesday night with a pressure-
packed 48-46 win over the fired-
up Furr Brahmas in Houston.
The win was a must for the
Tigers, as they all are now, who
remained in a first place deadlock
in district 10AAA with Conroe on
identical records of 8-1. Consoli
dated is now 28-2 for the season.
ENNIS WATSON once again
provided the turning point in the
game, according to Coach Church
ill.
“He hit two real vital free
throws with just 13 seconds left
that decided the game,” Churchill
said.
Furr, who had the lead for a
huge portion of the contest, was
nursing a two point bulge with
4:40 left when Jan Dozier hit a
corner jumper to knot the count.
The Brahmas then soared back
into a four point lead before
Watson took control of the game
with six points in the game’s last
minute.
The Houston team had per
formed erratically during the sea
son and went into the game as
heavy underdogs. They seemed to
be unfazed by the Tigers’ grow
ing reputation, however, and
jumped out to a quick lead which
was stretched to as much as six
points in the initial quarter be
fore a closing spurt by Consoli
dated narrowed it to 14-13.
CONSOLIDATED had their
best quarter in the second as they
took the lead two minutes into

the period and ran it up to six
at one point. Furr cut the lead
in half to trail 25-22 at the half
time break.
Furr regained the lead in the
third quarter as they entered the
last eight minutes with a 36-34
margin and a major upset bal
ancing on their fingers.
Watson, the Tiger’s 6-9 all-
state candidate, paced Consoli
dated’s offense with 24 points
while Dozier and David Terrell
each contributed 9 and James
Nichols added 6.
Coach Churhill described the
closeness of the game as a com
bination of good effort by Furr
and a below average game by the
Tigers.
“THEY PLAYED real well
against us in a vital game while
we didn’t play one of our better
ones,” Churchill explained.
“We just weren’t mentally pre
pared to play. We had beaten
them twice before, the last time
fairly easily.”
Consolidated returns to the
familiar surroundings of College
Station Friday night after a
three game road trip. Cypress-
Fairbanks will provide the com
petition Friday followed Tuesday
by the Brenham Cubs.
If the district should end in a
tie, a playoff game will be set up
between Consolidated and Conroe
to decide the league’s champion
and its representative in the state
playoffs. In two games the teams
split with Conroe winning by one
in Conroe and the Tigers taking
a ten point decision on their home
court.
