End of an era at Texas A&M.

master of ceremonies.
A storied era in the history of
Texas A&M athletics comes to a
close this month with the retire
ment of Aggie Athletic Director
Barlow (Bones) Irvin.
Irvin, whose retirement is ef
fective January 31, has already
started cleaning out his desk. He
is officially taking the last two
weeks of the month as vacation
time but will be in and out of
the office during that time.
His replacement has not been
officially announced as yet.
IRVIN, ds a student-athlete,
coach and athletic administrator,
has spent 27 years at Texas A&M,
the last 19 continuously.
He first came to Aggieland as
a student in the fall of 1922. He
played varsity football three
years and was an all-Southwest
Conference tackle in his senior
season of 1925.
Then he played two seasons
of pro football with the Buffalo
(NY) Bisons before entering the
coaching field as head football
mentor at St. Mary’s in San An
tonio. He returned to Aggieland
in 1931 as assistant freshman
football coach and then became
the line coach under Matty Bell
in 1933.
He returned to San Antonio in
1934 as football line coach and
head track coach at Brackenridge
High. In 1942 he moved over to
Thomas Jefferson High in the
Alamo City as head football and
track coach.
IN SIX seasons as Jefferson
his football teams won 48, lost 16
and tied 3. His teams advanced
to the state quarterfinals twice
and to the finals once. Among
his players were Kyle Rote, who
became All-America at SMU.
He again returned to A&M in
1948, never to leave again until
this month. He coached the A&M
Fish in football one year and
then, on July 8, 1949, he became
Athletic Director.
During his tenure as AD, Kyle
Field stadium was expanded, first
in 1953 and again last season.
He also was instrumental in add
ing a new press box to the sta
dium in 1953.
WHEN PAUL Bryant became
Athletic Director and head foot
ball coach in 1954, Irvin was
named assistant athletic director,
a post he held under three coaches
—Bryant, Jim Myers and Hank
Foldberg. Irvin again became ath
letic director when Gene Stallings
was named head football coach in
December, 1964.
Irvin was born in Cotulla, Tex.,
Dec. 31, 1903 and moved to San
Antonio when he was eight years
old. He has always called the
latter city his home.
At an early age he contacted
t; ; 1 —id fever and when he re
covered he was a mere whisper
of himself. “He’s nothing but
skin and bones,’’ said relatives
and friends. The “Bones” pail
stuck and has been his nickname
ever since.
By the time he got to high
school he was a heavyweight tac
kle and some tried to tag “Fat
Boy” on him. It was soon for
gotten and he remained “Bones.”
