Page 8 College Station, Texas Thursday, December 7, 1967 THE BATTALO SWC Meetings To Examine Basketball Scholarships DALLAS, Tex. — The South west Conference opens its winter meeting today and the agenda indicates a discussion of limita tions on basketball athletic schol arships to be the most important item. There will be the usual con sideration of recruiting problems but “nothing of great import” is due to come up, said Howard Grubbs, executive secretary of the conference. Meaning, nobody is on the pan for recruiting violations in any specific case. There are no schools on pro bation and no reports of any school being in line for such action. Texas A&M was taken off at the last meeting of the conference, being the fourth member of the league to be so penalized in the last three years. Southern Methodist, Texas and Arkansas had preceded the Ag gies. The reason for talking about a limitation on basketball schol arships, where there now is an agreement that such financial awards will be approximately 20 for both freshman and varsity competition each year, was not revealed. It might be financial—meaning a cut in the number—or just to set an official limit so there won’t have to be a checkup each year. At this time there is a limita tion of 50 in football. This ap plies only to freshmen. There is no limit on track, basketball, golf or tennis. The 1.6 grade rule, in which the conference favors application only upon entrances to college and not a continuing thing, will be discussed. The conference wants to apply its own schools’ scholarship rules after the ath lete is in school. The proposed national playoff in college football will be aired. Since the Southwest Conference sponsors the Cotton Bowl and such a plan might cut it out, it is expected that the league will oppose the national playoff. The meeting opens at 9 a.m. Thursday with head football coaches and athletic directors holding the first session where price of tickets to athletic con tests, telecasts and such items will be discussed. The business managers, ticket managers and other athletic offi cials will join the athletic direc tors and football coaches in a meeting Friday morning. The faculty committee, govern ing body of the conference, opens its session at 1 p.m. Friday. The meeting will be at III Sheraton-Dallas Hotel.
